The last time I made them — still many moons ago, with some younger family members — I recall being rather unimpressed. As a kid, though, it was exciting just to watch them transform in the oven; this was, of course, before we even had an Atari. What you do is take these plastic sheets with familiar characters on them, color them in, and bake them; they sort-of shrivel up and, ideally, flatten out again, smaller and harder. @ Gracie: Is all smoke MIB's?...Rainier said...
@ Gracie: Is all smoke MIB's? Who made these rules and why do some of them seem so one sided?

Well, I think it's because Jacob is more of a believer in free will than MiB is. It's kind of like God and Satan in Christianity; God is nearly always hands-off, let people save or damn themselves by their choices, where Satan is about deception, seduction, and pulling people in any way he can. One interpretation of how good/evil, light/dark works. (Another example comes from that perennial fave of the Lost writers, Star Wars, in which the Dark Side is seen as not more powerful, but seductive and in some ways the easier path.)

To me this was all significant -- when Jacob was talking about people getting a second chance to do the right thing and he only needs one. I'm really stuck on that as being a key. We shall see -- only 5 episodes left.. sniff, sniff. An outdated term, to be sure, and I apologise if I have offended. To be honest, I'd never thought of where that term had come from. I just assumed that it was another word for 'mute', and never thought it referred to the perceived lack of intelligence of someone who was mute.

I'm not a member of the deaf or mute communities, so I can't speak to whether "dumb" is considered an offensive term for "mute" — one would think so, I suppose, since whether or not the original connotation was meant to be "stupid" many folks couldn't help but make that association. The usage in The Stand, however, like elsewhere, was probably meant synonymically to "mute" (offensively or otherwise), and not directly in the sense of "dumb" as "stupid".
