Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before...

As you've probably heard already, Variety has reported that Dollhouse has been officially cancelled. As if to offer us a lollipop at the funeral, Fox has added that they will be incredibly generous and air all 13 episodes. Aw. How generous of them.

I know that back when Dollhouse was first announced, I blogged right here that I thought Joss should be riding a short bus to school for agreeing to go back to Fox, and said there's no way the show would last through a second season. But this is the one time I wanted to be SO wrong. Sigh.

The show got off to a bit of a shaky start, and had its ups and downs, but by the end of the season it was showing off some pretty stellar stuff. This season has been amazing, and the last episode -- where we got "Sierra's" backstory, was incredible.

There was no love lost between Joss and the WB by Buffy's fifth season, but that network at least gave his little show a chance. They gave both Buffy and Angel five seasons and a total of over 100 episodes each, which is about seven times the number of episodes Firefly got, and five times the number of Dollhouse eps.

Joss has already commented on the cancellation, in his weary yet comic style. I don't care how many times you get cancelled, Joss... I will always love you for things like this:

Hmm. Apparently my news is not news.

I don't have a lot to say. I'm extremely proud of the people I've worked with: my star, my staff, my cast, my crew. I feel the show is getting better pretty much every week, and I think you'll agree in the coming months. I'm grateful that we got to put it on, and then come back and put it on again.

I'm off to pursue internet ventures/binge drinking. Possibly that relaxation thing I've read so much about. By the time the last episode airs, you'll know what my next project is. But for now there's a lot of work still to be done, and disappointment to bear.

Thank you all for your support, your patience, your excellent adverts. See you again. -j.

This will probably just give people one more reason to say they're going to stop watching TV and will only watch TV series on DVD from now on. I'm starting to be with them on that.

I literally screamed "NOOOOO!!!!" when I saw the headline today. I knew the writing was on the wall but I was in denial. I cannot believe this has happened to Joss again. Please, Joss, go to HBO or Showtime or FX or AMC where they really appreciate genius talent. I cannot take another one of his brilliant shows being cancelled to soon. ugh.

Oil:Water, Whedon:Fox

Damn. I need a weekly dose of Whedon to get through life. Regardless of what happens to Whedon, he always comes back with a new project that always pleases me.

It took some time for me to get into Dollhouse, but I'm usually like that with any new show. It truly was something unique on TV. It'd be really nice if Joss Whedon will continue the Dollhouse series in another medium like he did with Buffy, Angel, and Firefly. OR... if a network picks up Dollhouse, that'd be great too.

Speaking of, you mentioning Angel in your previous posts enticed me to put in some of my Angel DVDs in and watch a couple of episodes. I don't remember if you mentioned it in your Angel book, but, which was your favorite Angel episode?

I've been preparing for this for two seasons, so I'm taking this rather well.

I just hope the episodes they have left will be put to good use and end the series properly.

Now, Joss Whedon, please go to a different network for your next endeavor.

Dollhouse never quite clicked with me. It was good... but just never got over the edge. Part of that may be FOX messing with the vision and all. However, tt has had some great episodes and probably will have more in the remaining 9. I eagerly await episode 210: The Attic.

It will be interesting to see what he does next. Seems like he could nab a deal with Showtime or HBO with the name he's garnered for himself over the years.

@Robert, they already did end the series properly with the breathtaking Epitaph 1. Absolutely stunning episode. Perhaps the series finale will be Epitaph 2?

He is brilliant! Brilliant I tell you. Why can't they see this?! Why do they not understand the fan base he brings to anything he does?! Idiots the lot of them.

Why can't networks appreciate brilliance? 4 great TV series by Joss Whedon; 3 canceled. Network TV Fail.

While I love Epitaph One, Dollhouse cannot be remember by its pinnacle in the middle of the show. That would be...weird? lol.

I guess I'm saying I hope they can repeat that vision for the series finale.

This is terrible news. Like Robert, I really hope they bring the second season and show to a close.

I didn't watch Dollhouse, but it seems to me that FOX was actually pretty fair with this show. Compare it to NBC and Southland, which was cancelled before even airing its second season.

It's just time to face the reality that people weren't watching the show. Did it have devoted fans? Yes, clearly...but not enough.

Often networks are far too quick to cancel a show, but I don't believe that was the case this time. They renewed it for a second season, and the ratings still didn't go up.

I can't wait to find out what crappy reality show will fill the time slot. I don't have cable for this very reason, we don't have any control of the content. I only watch shows on DVD or Blu-ray now, with Lost being the only exception. I'm sorry to see you go Dollhouse and I wish Joss all the best.

I do see what you're saying, leor, really I do, and I'm often annoyed by fans who are protesting against networks for cancelling a show that 7 people were watching, especially when they weren't actually one of those people. But putting the show at 9pm on a Friday? The same timeslot they stuck Firefly in? (Actually that might have been 8pm.) Not exactly giving it a fighting chance.

Nurse Brian: My fave Angel episode... that's a toughie. But I'd probably say the finale. It was absolute perfection in my eyes. And after that, it would be a three-way tie between "A Hole in the World," "Smile Time," and "Spin the Bottle." :)

My favourite MOMENT on Angel, however, is still Numfar's dance of Joy. ;)

ok, i'll concede that point. friday @ 9pm is a death slot :(

that said, now that they're taking DVR ratings into account, i guess not enough people were recording the show and watching it later, either.

i guess your original point is still the best: whedon should try to get his shows on alternatives to traditional networks. it would probably be a better fit on syfy

@Nikki: Those episodes are most definitely on my favorite list as well. Wesley's final scene in the series finale definitely has me tearing up every time.

Also, Numfar's Dance of Joy is something I like to cue up on the DVD player whenever I feel down in the dumps. LOL

I'm really not crazy about Dollhouse, but I liked the last episode (less Eliza.)

I just don't think the subject matter worked. I hope Joss can go on to something bigger and better.

I also think Fox gave them much more than the show deserved, given the ratings. They didn't have to air them all.

Nikki, I think if they had run it any other night but one with low expectations (ie Friday) it wouldn't have lasted more than a few episodes.

Typical Fox. I wish the "Dollhouse" was real so we could round up all the Fox execs, strap them into that bloody chair, drink one of Tophers juice boxes(all this rounding up makes me thirsty,)and send them all to "the Attic." Or just imprint them with memories of people with "common sense" so they stop cancelling my favorite shows!! (either way works for me.)
