Fringe Gets Season 5!

The cast of Fringe do their celebratory
slow walk of awesomeness
If you're on Twitter or Facebook or on the internet at all right now, you've probably already heard the news that Fringe has gotten a fifth and final season, a pickup of 13 episodes that will bring it to an even 100. i09 has quoted Kevin Reilly, president of Fox, as saying the 100 episodes will allow Fringe to come to the glorious conclusion the fans have deserved (he neglects to mention that 100 episodes means they can now also sell syndication rights, something that might actually make this show profitable at some point for them).

Here's what I love about this news:
1) Fringe has been renewed for another season!!!!
2) By saying it's the final season, we no longer have to worry if threads will be hanging or our show will be cancelled or we should be spending our free time on #SaveFringe campaigns. Now we know the writers know there's nothing more after episode 100, and they will write a satisfying (we hope) conclusion. (And that was not an opening for you Lost finale haters to make a comment... now now...)

I have been privy to a few spoilers, which may or may not happen:

  • Nina will become a bazillionaire when she bottles that divine red hair colour and sells it (I said to my husband the other night, I know it's meant to be garish, but I LOVE her hair)
  • Lincoln will stop mooning over Olivia, and moon over me (seriously, Lincoln, you... me... it would be magic. Just forget that I mentioned a husband in that previous point...)
  • Walter will lose all of his money when he invents a potato chip that tastes like a morgue
  • Peter and Olivia will have a child that will grow up to be... the Observer?
  • Astrid will continue to be the coolest chick on the planet
And yes, I know I've failed to blog on Fringe for weeks, for much the same reasons as I'd been missing out on Once Upon a Time, but I'm STILL three episodes behind (how am I the only person who hasn't seen the episode with my boyfriend, Henry Ian Cusick, in it???) However, I took tomorrow off as a holiday, so here's hoping I can finally catch up in time for tomorrow night's ep.

If it's any consolation, I spoke at a conference last weekend and may have convinced some people to check out Fringe. Does that earn me any forgiveness? ;)

"The celebratory slow walk of awesomeness"... yes!!!

I am so excited about this news. And I love your spoilers, Nikki!

Looking forward to when you catch-up on Fringe and blog a bunch about it.

PS: I love Lincoln too.

Can you believe that, at one point, I tried to tell myself that I didn't care one way or the other? (A feeble attempt to avoid anger, resentment and heartache in the event of cancellation.) But based on my present heart rate after hearing the Season 5 news, I know for sure that I was LYING!

Yay! Thank God this is getting the LOST treatment. I was worried that it would get cancelled prematurely and I'd have to buy stacks of tie-in Dark Horse comic books just to see how the damn thing ends! So I guess, with 13 episodes, it'll be a mid-season thing the way LOST Season 4 was.

This show got insanely complex this year, so it's comforting to know that I'll soon be able to sit back and watch everything from beginning to end and hopefully get a clearer, more concise view of what's going on in the two (three? four? 20?!) universes.

As long as Season 5 is chock full of all the great characters we've come to love (especially that sexy, saucy Faux-livia; seriously, Anna Torv, that hairdo looks HOOOOOOOOOTTTTTT on you!) I'll be happy! :D

Remember, back during the first season, when you asked us as a collective if the show was worth getting into, and I said no? WRONG ANSWER. As was evidenced last night, when I read the renewal news and actually got a little teary-eyed.

Also evidenced: that I am a giant dork. For getting teary-eyed at renewal news.

Cannot WAIT to read your take on these last few, and the brilliant possibilities for the final stretch.

I'm thrilled with this news. And it looks like the next/final season will begin this fall rather than starting in 2013. I suppose it would be in vain to wish that the millions of viewers the series has shed since the first season would come back, but I do hope that the friends of mine who dropped it and/or never started watching in the first place will catch the hell up on what they missed so that I can talk about the final batch of episodes with as many people as possible. 8^)

@TQM — Fringe comics have actually been put out by DC, specifically its recently shuttered WildStorm division, rather than Dark Horse. I suspect that corporate synergy was a part of it, the show being a Warner Bros. production and thus in the family. And a Season 5 promo video from Fox says that it's coming back "this fall" rather than 2013 — even if that would feel numerically apt, I'm certainly glad not to have to wait that long.

@YBS — I never gave up on the show, but I understand why some did early on. Since its return from its very first Season 1 hiatus in early 2009, though, I think it's been firing on all cylinders (including a couple that were probably cobbled together to do crazy schnapps in Walter's lab).

@ BLAM: Oh, snap! I remember WildStorm from back in 2007! And speaking of Fringe tie-in merchandise, I think this show would make an awesome big-budget video game akin to the scope of Grand Theft Auto, where you can drive around as members of the Fringe team solving cases in BOTH universes. Who's with me?! :P

As long as it's better than the LOST game...don't get me started on that one.

Blammbi: I kept saying I'd give up on it, but I never could manage to stop watching. (Shouldn't have underestimated the appeal of John Noble, who pretty much singlehandedly kept me going.) And absolutely right about the return from that first hiatus being the turning point -- they've been great as a rule ever since. But it took me a looooooong time to warm up to Anna Torv.

At any rate, I am delighted to have been wrong.

@YBS — "Blammbi"? Did Joan tell you to use that one? Anyway, I understand that Anna Torv, gore, and lack of forward-moving mythology were the big three issues that viewers had with Fringe early on, but I thought that she was doing more subtle, nuanced work than most people were acknowledging and I was eventually vindicated by her versatility (Olivia, Fauxlivia, Bellivia). Not that everyone ain't entitled to their own perceptions. Or that it's all about me...

Fantastic news. Despite the several good shows on at the moment (most of which are probably about to be cancelled) 'Fringe' is probably the only one which I am getting almost as excited about as I did with 'Lost'. I can't wait to see how it all ends, and I hope the finale is of the same quality as the rest of the show has been. As soon as the show finishes and the final season comes out on DVD, I will finally get around to buying the entire series on DVD and watching it straight through, as I imagine this is a show that is even better watched this way.

For all the stick that FOX gets about not giving genre shows a chance, much of which is well-deserved, I am so pleased that 'Fringe' was given the chance to become the show that it has, even without fantastic ratings.

In terms of the scheduling, my slight worry is that they will do what they did with 'Bones' this season and give us about 5 episodes around November and then make us wait 6 months to see the final 8 episodes. Fortunately, 'Fringe' is a show which we get over here in the UK almost the same time as it is shown in the States (I think at the moment it's shown on Friday in the US and then we get it the following Wednesday), so I won't have to wait too long to see it after it is first shown. And considering we're only just up to episode 4 of 'Once Upon A Time', that it something I'm very grateful for.

Blam: You know how she fawns over you. And it seemed preferable to 'Blamalamadingdong.' Also, I am markedly infantile.

Is it weird that when I first read "Blammbi" I thought, "Blamalamadingdong"? Josh and I are even more alike than I thought...

@YBS: Blam: You know how she fawns over you.

Ouch.

@Nikki: Is it weird that when I first read "Blammbi" I thought, "Blamalamadingdong"?

... Yes?

I vividly recall watching the SNL where Sting shows up in the "Makin' Copies" sketch. When Rob Schneider got to "Stingalingadingdong" the room erupted in such raucous laughter it ripped open the very fabric of spacetime.

@Nikki - I saw your post on FB yesterday, shut the door to my library office, and then screamed into whatever I could find to cover the sound of ecstasy! I am so glad that this is happening. I was worried this season would be rushed to conclude and then do so poorly. Not the show runners' fault - just common when pushed to the end prematurely. Can't wait to see what comes next! :)
