Lost 6.12 "Everybody Loves Hugo"

“It takes a lot of guts to walk up to a stranger and tell him you know him from some bizarro alternate universe.”

Hugo-centric, Mr. Cluck’s, the return of Libby, the end of Ilana AND the Black Rock... and the answer to what those friggin’ whispers are. Not one of the episodes that had me floating in its epicness, but still awesome. I loved it.

So the BIG reveal of the episode was that the whispers are actually the ghosts of people who are stuck on the island and are unable to move on to Heaven because of something they did. Which means... THE ISLAND IS A PURGATORY. Not for those on the plane, but it’s a purgatory nonetheless. So big kudos to everyone who ever thought at any time that the purgatory idea was a good one, and yet those who argued the survivors aren’t actually in purgatory were correct, too. I’m sure a lot of fans will complain that they hate this explanation because it seemed so obvious and that we’d figured it out long ago, but... isn’t that why we’re doing all of this speculating? I was happy with that one. And it was interesting that Michael – perhaps the only person Hurley has ever hated on the island – is the one to appear to him, and when Hurley finds out that he’s basically doing time... for eternity... he actually feels sorry for the guy. I love you, Hurley.

Just as Daniel and Charlie knew the other world existed the moment they saw Charlotte and Claire respectively, and Desmond saw the other universe when he touched Penny’s hand, Hurley sees it when he locks lips with Libby. I posted something last night about how so much of Lost comes down to love, but I also believe that entwined with the notion of love is the idea of connection, as I said in that post. Connections are so vital to Lost – the connections people had before they go on the plane; connections to each other on the island that they created there; connections that they failed to actually make because they didn’t talk to one another; connections that were lost when the groups split up – and it’s when these four men have a real, definite connection to the other person that they’re able to break through.

Highlights:
• Pierre Chang is still a speaker, but he’s introducing philanthropists rather than trying to confuse viewers of Dharma videos.
• During the video presentation about Hugo, seeing the bizarrely-located Mr. Cluck’s restaurants next to the Himalayas and Pyramids made me laugh out loud. Haha!!
• In the screen still where Hugo is wearing the t-shirt that says "Humane" on it, Jorge Garcia is holding Nunu, his real-life dog and the star of his blog.
• The T-Rex statue. LOL!!
• “She will love you. And if she doesn’t... WE WILL FIND SOMEONE WHO DOES.” Smack! Hahaha!! Everyone talks about spinoffs they’d love to see... I’d just love to see the Hurley and Carmen show.
• Hurley talking to Libby at her grave again. We’ve seen this a couple of times and it’s always sad and lovely.
• LIBBY!!!!!
• OMGWTF ILANA BLEW UP??!! I couldn’t believe when this happened... it was as shocking (and less funny) as when it happened to Arzt. But why did she make the dumbass move of just tossing her bag on the ground? The women seemed to have healed from severe facial burns when she was in the hospital and now she does this? She just seemed smarter than that. I was surprised... but I’m hoping the final episode gives us the background of Jacob and that she’ll factor into that somehow. I don’t think this is the last we’ll see of her.
• Neal Schweiber from Freaks and Geeks works at Mr. Cluck’s now!!
• Ah. Desmond. How I love that you’re back and a regular on the show again.
• Desmond to Hugo: “That is a LOT of chicken.”
• “All women are a little bit crazy, bruthah.” Haha!
• “How do you break the ice with the smoke monster?”
• “Clearly she was well enough for a... fajita field trip.”
• I love when Alpert asks if anyone wants to join him so he can do something totally insane and counter-productive to what everyone else wants, and Ben is the first person to stand up and join him. Ha!
• The look on Jack’s face when he finally sees John Locke. I have been waiting for that moment ALL SEASON!!
• Ben Linus going all To Catch a Predator on Desmond. HIGH-larious!!!
• OMGWTF did Desmond just run over John Locke with a frickin’ CAR?!

Answers:
• The whispers are the dead people whose ghosts are stuck on the island because of bad things they did.

The Numbers:
Desmond’s chicken is meal order 42. Ilana grabbed 4 sticks of dynamite.

Did You Notice?:
• Pierre Chang mentions the museum, and if you think back to “Recon,” Miles had mentioned to Sawyer that his father worked at the museum. So Chang is still his father in this reality... once again begging the question, why is Miles’ last name Straume?
• Speaking of which, now Miles, Charlotte, and Daniel are all connected to the museum. Will it actually play a role in anything in this sideways world? Will we have an episode where we actually see this museum? Will there be any ancient relics of anything like, oh, I don’t know, a Tawaret statue?
• During the video presentation, you could see the Mr. Cluck’s chicken mascot over and over again. This reminded me of the opening of this episode’s prequel, “Everybody Hates Hugo,” which opened with a dream sequence of English-speaking Jin standing next to a man in the chicken suit who said, “Have a cluckity cluck cluck day.”
• I was a little disappointed to not see Carmen puffed up like a peacock at the kudos her son was getting. In our universe she would have been standing on her chair cheering and yelling, “More applause for my ’Ugo!!”
• The blind date that Carmen is sending Hugo on is with Rosalita... in the other world, he was in Santa Rosa.
• Looks like in every reality, Senator Robert Kelly is going to be a doctor at Santa Rosa. Nice to see some consistencies over here.
• Again, Libby – someone who is dead in the other universe – can see through to the other side, just like Daniel and Charlie.
• Smokey is becoming more and more like Locke every day. His “oh, this old piece of wood? Why... I’m just a-gonna whittle this baby until it speaks to me and tells me if I need to make a spear or a tiny wooden ornament of an old lady in a rocking chair that I can put on my mantle” was something Locke would have said.
• Empty Sayid wears his hair quite distinctively pushed off to one side all of the time.
• Despite Jack having the fitting last name, Desmond seems to have become the shepherd for the other side, helping people see this timeline and realize they’re in the wrong one.
• With the end of the Black Rock, Crazy Arms Richard returns. I can understand why he’s upset, though... not only did he remove their greatest chance at getting rid of the plane, but the Black Rock was the last place where he physically saw Isabella, and it probably holds a lot of resonance for him.
• In the doctor’s office, he has the exact same picture of the island that we saw in “Everybody Hates Hugo.”
• In the rec room, there’s a chalkboard and on it someone has drawn an island with a shark in the water, and a turtle, fish, a giant alligator hovering over it, and what looks like the silhouette of a swan in the water (for the Swan station? Where Libby died, perhaps?) In the corner of the picture there is what appears to be a baby buggy with a butterfly floating out of it. Butterflies in mental hospitals seem to be a mainstay no matter what reality you’re in. Perhaps encouraging patients to see the metamorphosis they could undergo with treatment?
• One of the inmates was playing Connect Four, which Hugo played obsessively when he was at Santa Rosa.
• Oh no!! The great team of Miles and Hurley have been split up for good! Say it ain’t so...
• Jack says maybe he’s supposed to let go... this stems all the way back to the beginning of season 3 when he heard Christian’s voice over the intercom of the aquarium cage he was being held in and Christian was saying, “Let it go, Jack.” But interestingly, last season in the DI Jack seemed content to let other people run the show and tell him what to do, as if he was relieved to let someone else take over.
• So... if the whispers happen and the dead person appears (just like Michael standing nearby when they heard them) does that mean Harper, Goodwin’s wife who appeared to Juliet in the jungle in the rain right after the whispers... is dead? What terrible thing did she do to get stuck there? Is she the one who told Ben about the affair between Goodwin and Juliet that led to Goodwin’s death?
• In the sideways world, Hurley remembers the blanket. :::sniff:::
• I thought for a second that the well where Smokey takes Desmond was the one with the FDW, but it clearly wasn’t.
• Just before Smokey pushes Desmond down the well (deep breaths, Nikki, DEEP BREATHS) Desmond asks him what the point of being afraid is, and you see Smokey begin to open his mouth and then close it, as if he’s stumped.
• I do not believe that Desmond is dead. I am like Rose and her faith in Bernard. He is fine. He is fine. I heard water when Smokey dropped the torch. He’ll be just fine. I mean... you can high-dive into five inches of water without anything bad happening to you. Right? Am I right?!
• When Smokey returns to the camp and tells everyone that they don’t need to worry about Desmond anymore, you can hear the Locke motif in the music... something we haven’t heard used with Smokey yet, I don’t think. AGAIN a suggestion that he’s actually Locke again.
• Sun coming through the jungle and scanning every person in that camp for Jin’s face was heartbreaking...
• I think I said this a few episodes ago but I’ve noticed that Hurley is never called Hurley in the sideways world, and I wonder if we’ll ever find out what that nickname refers to in this world?

So Many Questions...
• Did anyone know what that Russian book was that Hurley picked up? I wrote down the lettering and tried it through a translator, and I think I wrote it down wrong because all but one word was a jumble, and the one that wasn’t was “law.” Could it have been the paperback Russian edition of the Book of Law? (Har.)
• Who was the other boy that Smokey saw in the jungle with Des? It’s interesting that both Sawyer and Desmond have also seen the boys with him. Could THAT one be the Man in Black when he was a kid, and the blonde one was Jacob? Or vice versa? Smokey tried to chase down the blonde one, but just waved this one off with a dismissive flick of his hand, which was interesting.
• How did Hurley know immediately that those were ashes in Ilana’s pouch? He seems to know whatever is in there is important, when it probably looked just like the sand to him.
• Does Desmond get it wrong when he says Smokey is John Locke... or is it not a coincidence that he’s seeming more and more like John? Could the John inside of him be coming through and controlling Smokey more than the evil that’s inside him?
• Richard, testing Hugo, tells him that a while ago Jacob told him what the island was, so ask him. So why didn’t Jack or ANYONE jump up and say, “Oh really?? Then WTF is this island??!!”
• Michael tells Hurley not to get himself killed in response to Hurley asking if there’s anything he can do for him. It seems like a formality for him to say that, but maybe there was something more to it: maybe he really DOES need Hurley and the gang to stay alive and if they can, they might help those ghosts trapped on the island to finally move on.
• So why did Desmond hit Locke with a car? On the rewatch I’ve noticed just how much Smokey seems like Locke, and now I’m wondering... is it possible that the Man in Black was able to switch places with alterna-universe Locke? Could it be that Locke is actually the man we see on the island, and Smokey is the one who looks like Locke in the sideways world? Was Desmond trying to eradicate Smokey? OR... is poor Locke doomed in every reality to bring people together based on his demise? Does Desmond think that somehow he will round up the troops he needs if he causes some major rift in things like this?

Desmond hit Locke with a CAR? What?!

Okay, back later for more intelligent thought.

VW: gumomplo - I have no idea, but I think I want one.

Ok…just a couple of things before I go to bed. Forgive the scattered manner in which this is being written, but I just want to get it out there and then work on it a bit with the rest of you tomorrow. Where is Isabella’s cross? Did Ricardo re-bury it already? Why is he still acting so scattered? Get it together Ricardo.

I am so loving ZensibleJack. Where has he been for 6 seasons? He really HAS come a long way. I am so glad we have a 96 inch projection TV.

What on earth did Hurley see in that bag? I was waiting to see black and white stones. Bet you ONE DOLLAR we don’t get to find out until the finale.

At least Ben got some of his mojo back in this episode. Finally talking like the old Ben we love to hate, and making some decisions for himself. Heading off with Miles and Richard. Interesting. I also liked his little "talk" with "possible perv" Desmond in the AU.

I loved the Libby and Hurley flashsidways. Very sweet. But will we find out who original timeline Oceanic 815 Libby really is before all of this is said and done? Also…I liked how this flashsidways really, really, really didn’t take away from the island story. And there was much more island time. Sigh of relief from my husband. His favorite part was Ilana blowing up like Arzt. My husband’s not that deep. All action, all the time.

What’s up with crazy AU Desmond? Running over Locke? What a shock. Seriously. One moment we’re watching MIB give the stare down to Jack “ala finale showdown time” and my kids and I started counting down to the “Boom” LOST ending in black. But instead, we see poor Locke trying to push himself up a hill in his wheelchair. Doesn’t he qualify for a handicapped parking spot at that school? Quite a dramatic/drastic way to get Locke to “wake-up.”

Pushing Des down a well? When Des was saying "What's the point in being scared?" MIB looked TERRIFIED.

Ok...now I'll read your comments and go to bed. NIGHT.

was the guy playing connect 4 the patient who kept repeating the numbers?

Anonymous said...

Connections? Like the explosion caused an electro-magnetic event and the people in sidewaysland need constants?

I'm sure Desmond is okay. And Sayid will be fine. (Repeat over and over.)

Desmond is visiting the candidates in sidewaysland - like Jacob did in the other reality?

Desmond seems emotionally deadened on the Island - is that because he's trying to concentrate on living two lives at the same time?

I thought Des hit lock with the car to give him sight into the alt island world, like Charlie submerging Des' car. Which will send Locke off to hospital to be repaired by Dr. Shepard.

love the use of willy wonka for next weeks ep!

nikki excellent post once again. cant wait rewatch this one.

des seems to know a lot. i like the roll this show has been on since richard ep

What can I say about this episode? So much to think about and so little time to write down my thoughts.

I love this ep even if it was not as powerful as the previous ones... especially last week's. Since I have been sick for over a week, I need to hit the sack so I can beat this. So I have not had the chance to completely read your entire post, Nikki but I need to get my thoughts down so I can hit the sack and get better. I will finish reading the entire post tomorrow and might have more to discuss then. :)

Loved the trophy! I want........! And who was presenting - nice to see Pierre Chang.

Hurley talking to Ilana and telling her about Libby - his connection to her and about her being murdered. Only to look up to see the man who did it - Michael! Hurley has not seen Michael since he left the island with Walt. He has, as far as I know, no idea what Michael did to try to redeem himself by getting on the freighter - or potentially what became of him.

Hurley: What are you doing here?
Michael: I'm here to stop you from gettin' everyone killed!

Jack is almost constantly asking Hurley who he is talking to now... LOL

Sideways Hurley waiting for his date; sideways Libby appearing at the restaurant and Hurley's relief when he saw her believing that she was the one he was waiting for. And yes, he was even if he did not know it. LOL Love this show soooooo much as things that went around are coming around again!

Libby: "Well, if I tell you, you are probably going to think I am crazy. Hugo, do you believe that two people can be connected? Like soul mates?"

...she's still at Santa Rosa!

Ilana: "I've been training my whole life for this." Then she blew up real good.

My husband, Justin's response? "She did an Arzt!" Yup, that says it all. :)

Flocke's reverse logic re. how they are getting off the island and they all need to be together to do that. Then Sayid returns... cue the music!

Flocke: "And you let them live?"
Sayid: "Can't see the point of killing them when I had what I came for."

What a bold face lie! Is he just going along now with Flocke? Does Sayid have something up his sleaveless arms?

...cue the reveal - Desmond! Sayid tied him to a tree. Poor, boy. Someone get me a knife!

Part 1... tbc

"HELLO JACK" Just a great way to (nearly) end the episode I thought.

1. Hugo sponsoring the Chang's paleontology wing

2. Michael is associated with the whispers, like Christian was when he appeared on the freighter to Michael.

3. Libby -- she never left the institution and never was on 815. Hurley never was in the institution.

4. Memories of Artz.
Ben: "She was hand picked by Jacob, trained all her life and tells you who you are and then she blows up. The island was done with her." That pink slip really hurt!

5. Locke: "We're waiting for your friends; Hugo, Sun, Jack" -- I guess that makes three.

6. Jack trusts Hurley no matter what. He realizes he can't fix everything and it's difficult to sit on the sidelines, but he's beginning to let it go... just like he heard Christian say on the shark tank intercom.

7. The whole Desmond nonchalance with Locke has me scratching my mind, especially in light of what happens.

8. Hurley: "Dead people are more reliable than alive people"

9. Desmond can see the kid (so could Sawyer)... but not Richard

10. The whispers are those stuck on the island, who cannot move on because of what they did. Does it mean that those who appear off the island are able to move on, also because of what they did? (Eko, Ana Lucia, Charlie)

11. Another well, older unfilled well. What did they find when they dug it? Did Locke suspect Desmond's specialness, and how?

12. Vision induced two different ways: 1) Near-death: Charlie, Locke (presumably) and 2) Love: Daniel, Libby, Hurley... and then there's Desmond, whose vision was induced in an accident.

13. "Hello Jack"

14. The weird music in the next week preview.

Desmond ran over Locke, who will be transported to the hospital where Jack will perform spinal surgery so he can walk again!

Hugo absolutely knows what he's doing in going back to Not-Locke with the bag o' ashes.

And Libby + Hurley = Magic. Watros is awesome.

SenexMacdonald said...

Part 2...

Was the bag Hurley found the bag where Miles hid the diamonds? Is that what leads Hurley to make the choice he makes of blowing up the Black Rock? We were shown the bag for a reason I am sure... it could not have been just a throw-away shot!

Desmond and Hurley - their conversation was wonderful. Desmond's response to Hurley to go with his gut and to try to find out where Libbby thinks she knew him from before giving up on her.

Then 42... that magic number! The answer to life, the universe and everything. If that is not the right number to appear at this time, with what Desmond is doing then... the numbers really mean nothing.

Desmond lied to Flocke. He knows exactly who he is.

Ben: "Ilana... Hand picked by jacob... Trained to come and protect you candidates. No sooner does she tell you who you are... then she blows up. The island was done with her. Makes me wonder what it's going to do with us?" Not one for understatements, are you, Ben.

Desmond to Flocke: "There's nothing special about me, brotha. This island has it in for all of us."

Desmond seeing the boy. That is interesting since the only other person to see him as Sawyer.

Jack has again become a man of faith. Given the choice of going with Richard to blow up the plane? "I'm going with Hurley." "...this is me trusting you."

The whispers are ... the dead! Not the Others at all. Wow - did not see that coming.

Hurley's date with Libby... on the beach. That admission that he could not remember then the kiss. So sweet - and then the memories began to flow. Hurley remembers!!! That's one.... go, Desmond. :)

Flocke taking Desmond to the well. I thought it was THE WELL until Flocke said there were more. FIgured Flocke might want him to go down and turn the donkey wheel. However, I knew as soon as Desmond admitted to not being scared - he was going down that well.

Our Losties know that Flocke needs to be stopped - somehow. Dead would be better but might not be possible. If a connection exists/existed between Locke (now dead on the island) and Flocke as we have discussed before, then I can completely understand why what happened happened. I was shocked but not completely surprised when Desmond ran over Locke. The possibility that this connection reaches even as far as the Sideways world, or is maintained by the Sideways world, would mean that in order to stop Flocke, all avenues to Locke and who he is have to be destroyed.

Last thought for the night - Willie Wonka! More later...

Lisa: You know, when Hugo first opened the pouch I thought, "Oh my god, is it the pouch with the white and black stones from Adam and Eve??" But then I realized he was rifling through Ilana's stuff, and that pouch contained Jacob's ashes. (At least I'm assuming that's the pouch he grabbed... that stuff has GOT to be useful on the island, after all.)

Benny said...

@Nikki: I think Desmond hitting Locke was a way to make him see through. Charlie and Desmond were able to see through the first time by going through a near death experience.

Marebabe said...

Wow! Wouldn’t it be great if EVERY show on TV could make us all tingly with excitement? That’s me tonight. Yup, got tingles over here! Once again, Nikki, you have dealt with pretty near every point in tonight’s episode, which still amazes me. Good work. Just a few itty-bitty details:

Was that Nunu making a cameo appearance? Jorge Garcia’s beloved Chihuahua, star of Jorge’s blog, “Dispatches From the Island”? If that was her, I’m just tickled. She was seen in the opening bit, in the series of shots showing highlights of Hugo’s life. And another OMG moment that wasn’t even part of the show... was that Radzinsky I saw in a commercial for “Modern Family”? I think it was him, coaching kids’ basketball.

I had the idea that Ilana was standing much closer to the group right before she blew up. But clearly, she was pretty far away, because the explosion only got her. Nobody else was hurt or killed.

Did you notice the restaurant, “Spanish Johnny’s”? I think that was a nod to Hugo’s friend, Johnny, who used to pal around with (and steal garden gnomes with) Hugo in “Everybody Hates Hugo".

JS said...

I did enjoy the episode. I was thinking the sideways story seemed kind of obvious, except when Desmond was on the screen.

Dy-NO-Mite- I was completely taken by surprise when Ilana did an Arzt. Notice it didn’t blow up until she moved away from the candidates. I was starting to wonder how much dynamite was in there anyways, considering how many events it has been used in. And then, well it doesn’t matter anymore.

Santa Rosa – I scanned the room but sadly I am in a hotel and cannot re-watch or stop and rewind. Leonard wasn’t there, and there were no numbers. I kept waiting for the doctor to turn into water a la X-Men

UGO – Part of what was predictable for me was the picnic on the beach, and the awakening with the kiss. Which is fine. So what happens now that Hugo is “awake”? Is Desmond planning to swing by and round them all up?

Rebecca T. said...

@Marebabe: I'm pretty sure that was Nunu. I got all excited about it too. Glad I'm not the only one that caught it.

I'm in love with you... there I said it. Great stuff as always.

Benny said...

@Marebabe: yes it was Radzinski. I had the same reaction!

I thought the kid was the same kid we have seen before, just older. I guess it is Jacob growing again.

The bag was Jacob's ashes Lisa - I think! :)

Hated that the whispers were just ones who were caught and could not pass on. That was just lame! I could have written a better explanation so this one really disappoints.

That intense ending with Jack and NotLocke! Was wow.

Not sure what to think of Desmond running down Locke. We just saw NotLocke push Desmond down a well so my first thought was Desmond dose not realize there is a difference in Locke and MiB - Desmond did tell him MiB that he was John Locke.

Nikki Stafford said...

AH!! I saw him holding that dog and thought, "Man, that dog looks familiar." WHY didn't I think of Nunu?! I am totally adding that in, thanks gals!! :)

Man in Black/"Locke body voice and mannerisms/Smokey/'Deadwood' alum Titus Welliver gets around. He's on the island, and he's on "The Good Wife" on CBS as Glenn Childs the bad DA, still evil incarnate right after he finishes his island gig on ABC minutes later.

My theory: Desmond hit Locke so Locke would go to the hospital and Jack can fix his spine.

Great recap, Nik!

I rarely re-watch an episode in its entirety if at all. That's mostly due to (1) time and (B) only having a VCR, which is often needed to tape something else. Now I really want to see tonight's Lost again, immediately, for some key moments and the many revelatory, humorous, and romantic lines of dialogue — and for the first time in months I've had to tape something else during Lost thanks to the return of Glee.

More comments to come, but one quick note to Nikki: Desmond hitting John was shocking, but he likely did so to give Locke a near-death experience akin to Charlie's through which he could glimpse the original timeline.

PS: Did anyone try to post a comment earlier and not have it show up?

VW: unrelush — To recover after falling off the wagon.

I LOVED this episode! Things are really coming to the crunch.

I noticed Jorge's dog Nunu made a cameo with him in the slide show at the beginning. Aawww!

@SenexMacdonald: A moment after Ilana evaporated I turned to my husband and said: "She blowed up real good" Hahahaha!

I am so glad Desmond is back too, Nikki. He is beautiful, lovely to look at…..sigh.

Island Des - So glad to see him, he is beautiful. I couldn’t understand why everyone who has seen FLocke so far knows it isn’t Locke but Desmond sees Locke. At the end of last week’s episode we all thought he knew exactly what to do, but now it just seems he has had all fear removed. He wasn’t fearful of FLocke, when anyone who could see he wasn’t Locke would be. I wonder what FLocke was intending with that push – nullify him? When the kid showed up, he looked like the same kid, but with dark hair. Furthering the theory that MiB and Jacob are two parts of one being.

Sideways Des Whoa. Dude is super confident, and definitely seems to know what he is doing. How did he know exactly where to find Hurley? He must have employed some Widmore Industry detectives to help him. Of course his order number was 42! I love that he says without hesitation that his son’s name is Charlie. I am starting to think that perhaps the Desmond’s were switched – but then how would he know anyone on the Island. Oh well.

Lisa(until further notice) said...

@Nikki...you're right of course, it must be the ashes. But when Hurley first picked it up, it was noisy. It sounded like a bag of marbles or something. Wouldn't the ashes be silent? Oh well...AWESOME ep. and recap. Can't wait till next week. Again. Haven't gone to bed yet. Will I? Or won't I? I will. Wait, just a few more posts to read first. You guys are addicting!!!

VW: thingl: MIB'L, as in "Watch out Desmond, that THING'L push you in the well." Dang, Desmond, you didn't watch out.

Hutch said...

Enjoyed the episode but not as much as the last two...I been wondering, as Desmond was going trough the electro-magnetic charge was Jacob entering his body. He became so calm and it would explain his reaction at the well and hitting Locke with the car.

Loretta said...

I'm beginning to feel like it's very important that the folks who died in the 815 line have special knowledge in the sideways-line EXCEPT for John Locke. Is this because little pieces of him are poking through into Flocke/MiB's consciousness?

*sigh* I'm still just so very unwilling to let go of the real John Locke entirely... and now that he's been run over by Des! (Never before have I wanted to smack the heck out of Mr. Hume!)

Also, I actually wrote down "To Catch a Predator" during that Ben/Desmond scene too.

And Samm Levine!! Why don't more people notice how brilliantly funny you are and hire you?!?

Unknown said...

Nikki, first time poster, long time reader. I have all your books and they've really helped me get further into this show. About Des running Locke over: if Des is trying to make people reconnect, then couldn't he be trying to get Locke back with Jack? After all, that's probably the most important relationship in the series (the not romantic kind, I mean), so couldn't Des be trying to help things along by making Locke have to go back to the hospital to see Jack again? Also, it does seem a bit fitting: Locke throws Des down a well, Des runs over Locke. They're even! :-)

JS said...

Re: Sideways Desmond - and, oh yeah, he ran Locke over! Because they switched consciousness? How? If Locke is dead in both the sideways and the island, does the body go away??

@Marebabe - that was Nunu!!

When Chang was speaking there was a shot from the back of the audience and at the front table, to Chang's right, was a woman with long, curly, red hair. That was a nice touch. Will have to watch again to see if there was also a Daniel photo double.

I would rather have seen Eko than Michael, but Michael fit better here. Found the whispers explanation rather obvious. Still, it was an answer.

Speaking of Eko, Locke's conversation with Desmond echoed (hee) Smokey's confrontation with Eko. Neither was afraid.

I actually clapped my hand over my mouth when Ilana went boom. Nikki is so right that Ilana was foolish to slam her pack down like that.

Watros was wonderful.

And I really, really wish they'd give Frank something to do.

Ha! Nikki, I’ve never had nightmares from “Willy Wonka”, but I was driven stark, raving insane once when I got the Oompa-Loompa song stuck in my head for a WEEK! It was a long road to recovery, but I made it. And I finally made peace with the Oompa-Loompa song. Believe it or not, it’s what I now substitute, deliberately singing a few bars, to eject some other annoying song that’s stuck in my brain, playing over and over. Yeah, me and Willy Wonka go way back!

Anyone with a photographic memory or knowledge of the acting credits able to confirm or deny?

Fun episode, so I'll start with the HOLY SHIT moment of the night: Illana's death. That was out of nowhere, and brought back fond memories of how sudden Arzt's death was. A word of warning to the survivors - dynamite is very unstable!!!

It was a good move on the part of the writers to bring a focus back to Hurley's importance to the group. Not only can he communicate directly with Jacob and ghosts, but he's the one person everyone (fans and characters) likes. "Give me a bucket...family size." It doesn't get better than that.

Prof. Chang's introduction of Hugo was amusing, and I kept imagining what it must've been like to film scenes with a bunch of "Mr. Cluck's" merchandise.

More importantly, the alternate reality storyline is now focusing on Desmond's mission to unite everyone (He's order #42!). Libby (who's apparently still at Santa Rosa with Sen. Kelly from "X-Men") has memories of the Island. Awwww....they're soulmates. Libby also mentions a "Dr. Burke". Is Juliet working at Santa Rosa?

Desmond telling the Monster that Widmore gave him "experience" is a nice and simple way of explaining what happened last week.

Ben's thoughts on Illana's death made me think of the Island as the writers. They were done with Illana. Simple as that.

Oh, here's the other HOLY SHIT moment = the explosion of the Black Rock. This episode is filled with enough dynamite to make Michael Bay envious. Thank Jacob that Hurley's role isn't done yet, and he can outrun dynamite explosions. He's wearing a red shirt, after all! (Star Trek reference, anyone?)

- Commercial for "Avatar". Ok, I get it, it's the highest grossing film ever. Is it the best? Hell no. Is it one of the best? Far from it. Did I like it? Yes, but it didn't stand out to me. That's enough of my ranting though, back to "Lost"...

- I want to watch "Happy Town", even though it'll probably be corny.

Michael is telling Hurley to not blow up Ajira 316, so what's his deal? "Dead people are more reliable than alive people." Ha.

How are these two timelines going to converge with each other? I'd imagine that when something like that happens, it wouldn't be good. Will Desmond's mission kill everyone and everything? My guess is "no", as to that would be a downer of an ending. My bet is that Jack will ultimately successfully, finally bring everyone home from the Island and end the cycle of a Man in White and a Man in Black. I'll be happy with whatever the ending is, but if they went for a "happy" ending, that'd be the one I'd go with.

@Loretta: The credits are up and it's the same kid.

Different clothing I guess!

Really awesome review. You covered some interesting points that I hadn't really thought about! So thanks for that.

If I am not wrong, they kid that they saw was in fact the original blonde kid that they had seen. It seems pretty much the same to me. He seemed to have his hair wet though, which is why he didn't look so blondish. But to me, it seemed like the same kid.

But it is like some people have said, perhaps MIB and Jacob are the same person raised in different realities.

Apart from that, while reading your review, I thought of the fact that perhaps it is indeed Locke who is in the island and Smokey on the sideways world, which is why Desmond tries to kill him. Interesting...

Kotowski said...

Tonight marked the return of the small boy frustrating the Monster. What's up with that?

Ben's reply to Hurley telling them they have to go see Locke was priceless. Now... there are FIVE factions on the Island:
Team Smoke. Mission: Leave the Island (and maybe release Hell on earth, no big deal)
Team Jack & Hurley. Mission: Listen to Jacob for instructions. Trust your gut.
Team Richard. Mission: Stop the Monster from leaving by blowing up all exits.
Team Widmore. Mission: Use reality-jumping Desmond to unite everyone and stop the Monster in an unexplained way.
Team Sawyer & Kate. Mission: Leave the Island by themselves on the submarine.

- It'll be exciting to see which team is correct in the end!

How do you break the ice with the Smoke Monster?

Jack had a huge revelation tonight about finally learning to let things go. His father told him this all the time, and he's finally accepting that he can't fix everything. Good for him. Hurley also confessed that talking to Locke is solely his idea, and the fact that Jack trusts him is a huge boost in confidence for him.

BIG ANSWER: The "whispers" heard throughout the series in the jungle are the ghosts of people who cannot "move on", according to Michael.

Hurley and Libby finally had their picnic. I'm glad he didn't forget the blankets. This season is really touching on the theme of love and the power of it against evil. Desmond and Penny. Hurley and Libby. Daniel and Charlotte. Charlie and Claire. All of these romances are providing fuel for memories of the Island in the alternate reality. It looks like Desmond encouraged Hurley to follow through with Libby, and perhaps he'll do the same for others. Good ol' Dez is playing Mr. Cupid now!

- Evangeline Lilly shampoo commercials make me happy.

- Stan Lee in an "Iron Man 2" commercial makes me even happier.

- Radzinsky is a basketball coach in "Modern Family". I wish we saw him kill himself with the shotgun in the Swan.

Honorable Mention for the third HOLY SHIT moment is Desmond being tossed down the Orchid well. Great conversation between him and the Monster, but c'mon, it was predictable when you could tell that the Monster was concerned about Desmond's confidence.

Kate's smile at Jack = yes. I want them to end up together. ( I know, I know.)

Cuse and Lindelof said that this season would focus heavily on the ongoing conflict between Jack and Locke. It looks like shit's about to go down.

Final HOLY SHIT moment: Desmond hitting Locke with his car. Is this a BIG mistake? Desmond did it for revenge because of being tossed down the well. Did he not realize that THAT Locke is not the monster? I mean...it's JOHN LOCKE!!!!

The Roald Dahl poem (made popular by Willy Wonka) was great with the preview for next season. It really sums up the unpredictability of the outcome of the series. Damn, the writers are good at outlining this whole thing and keeping it sealed tight.

If you're curious, here's the poem:

There's no earthly way of knowing
Which direction they are going!
There's no knowing where they're rowing,
Or which way they river's flowing!
Not a speck of light is showing,
So the danger must be growing,
For the rowers keep on rowing,
And they're certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing...

First episode of the season that fell flat for me, I'm afraid. Oh well, I guess you can't win 'em all!

What didn't work for me?

1) The Anticlimax. Well, we spent Dr. Linus, Ab Aeterno, and the Package gearing up Richard and Illana to lead their team to the Ajira flight, and to have it all fall apart so senselessly just seemed like poor story-telling. Now I love these writers, don't get me wrong, so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt until the final curtain has dropped, but why spend so many episodes gearing up to something you're just going to pull the rug out from underneath so abruptly? At this moment (and I stress at this moment), Illana seems like the biggest waste of a character yet on this show. Nikki and Paulo paid off better. Here's hoping there's a major piece of her importance we're missing.

2) The Directionlessness. People complain about this on LOST a lot, but usually they're just confusing directionlessness with slow pacing. LOST rocks the careful pacing normally and that's one of the reasons I love the show. Here on-Island Hurley plot consisted of two trips to the Black Rock, a lot of arguing, and characters following people around not even knowing why. If we were given a strong reason/impetus/rationality for why Hurley felt the need to take everyone to Locke, maybe this wouldn't have been such a problem, but we're given so little to go on. We can only ASSUME that Michael told him it would be a good idea, and we can only ASSUME that Michael must have made a really impassioned case for this since we weren't shown it. As it is, Hurley's motivations remain vague and unclear IN HIS OWN EPISODE -- not a LOST standard. The splitting of Team-Richard from Team-Hurley just didn't feel right what with the bonding those two went through in Ab Aeterno. What was the point of that coming together if they're to split off so quickly and for no clear reason.

3) No Clear Throughline. LOST has customarily done a phenomenal job of giving each episode a clear narrative throughline despite each being one small piece of a much larger puzzle. The On-Island stories were here disjointed, hurried, and without a logical A-to-Z coherence. Again, this may have been helped if we constantly saw Hurley struggling to trust Michael and his advice and then coming to accept him over the course of the show. Instead Hurley just makes the break from Richard without explanation, and we're left wondering why our characters have just handed themselves over to the most dangerous man on the Island. Where's the thought process and/or rational follow-through here? Hopefully this will come soon, but without it, the episode left me puzzled not just at the overall picture of what's going on (like usual) but also at what just happened (unusual).

I mean what DID just happen? Many episodes are spent preparing for something; Michael pops up and says "Nah, do the exact opposite" and everyone's like "K." Meh - Didn't jive with me.

BUT, this is still LOST, so there was still more than enough awesome to keep my hopes high for the show:

- Everything in the AU was great.

- Whispers answer works well even if it was delivered a bit too matter-of-factly. (LOST always excels when it answers things without just SAYING "_____ is ______.")

- MIB and Desmond moments were cool, if typically cryptic. Is MIB afraid of Desmond? Does he know what makes Desmond special? Could he tell? Sawyer wasn't afraid of him either, so it's not just that which unnerved him...

- If MIB was indeed showing more Locke-like tendancies, then that's awesome to the max. I kind of hope he doesn't actually know WHY he was whittling that stick -- like he just found himself doing it a la Locke :)

I feel odd finding myself the downbeat one this time - it's rare for me. I think the only other episode in the history of LOST that left me feeling this way was 2.12 (Fire + Water)!

Fred said...

When we saw that other kid, my immediate response was Children of the Corn, to which my wife said, it's all a game for these children. It's these mysterious children playing this game behind the scenes. The children are the ones in control of everything, much like on the old Star Trek where Kirk and crew landed on a planet with only children (adults died of a disease).

Game changer with Ilana dead. So cool! Ilana was beginning to hit one note, and one note only. I never trusted Ilana, and I still say she was responsible for the deaths of the Ajira passengers. But Richard now takes over her mania. Will this get Miles killed, or Ben?

It looked like Ben was coming back into his own with the explanation that once Ilana told them they were candidates, the island didn't need her. That's the old Ben, who is figuring things out, planning and weighing the options. For Ben it comes down to protecting the island. Hope to see him back in fighting form next week.

What a conclusion. Desmond running Locke over. Once again, we have the car that comes out of nowhere and causes an accident. Only this time Locke will get to meet Jack at the hospital. Obviously, it isn't romancing Helen that wakened Locke, but meeting with Jack that will waken him to the true reality. End of Helen's story? Time will tell.

If that's the case with Locke, the island was already moving people in that direction even before Desmond showed (but it's a weaker powered island from under the sea). Jack did meet Locke, and he was supposed to rekindle Locke's belief in destiny. Now Jack will do it, Locke will see the island in his memories. Will that throw a wrench into the Helen-Locke romance?

But in questioning Desmond's actions I have to ask how did he know what to do? Who told him? Or did he figure it out from his memories of the island? How?

Once more Desmond is in a hole on the island without an escape hatch, except if there is a wheel. But Locke said this was another well, implying it's not the well with the wheel. Unless there is some sort of Cerberus vent connecting, and who knows that map on the Swan hatch better than Desmond? I expect an injured Desmond to make his way to the wheel and turn it, or to some other lever and blow the island up. He did it once before, so symmetry may allow him to do it again. Unless he meets up with Zoe. This way he can get off the island. Time for one last time travelling experience, anyone.

Final worry. Miles asking Hurley why he trusts dead people. Because they know? Know what? Just cause their dead doesn't mean they have any insights. And Hugo's trick with splitting the group through a fake "I talked with Jacob" ploy. This might suggest what Hurley said to Richard at the end of Ab Aeterno was not from Jacob (Richard pointed out correctly that Jacob never tells anyone what to do). Were HUgo's eyes shifting at the end of Ab aeterno?

Thanks, Nikki, for the excellent recap, as always

Candidates
Notice the candidates + Frank, i.e. pilot, go to FLocke and the non-candidates go looking for grenades. I am expecting many explosions through the rest of the series and particularly the finale. And, BTW, what are they expecting is going to happen after the plane is gone, just go back to the beach and hope Smokey goes back to wherever he came from?

Jack’s face was priceless – he smiles at Kate (they last saw each other before the temple massacre, so he is probably glad to see she’s OK), then sees FLocke. This is the first time he is seeing Locke not dead, right? I was wondering if his reaction was due to seeing Locke undead, or if he could see the monster inhabiting Locke.

I cannot imagine what kind of conversation is going to happen. Now that they are all together, and Desmond is gone, and anyone else who has additional knowledge of the island is gone, how far can the candidates really negotiate with the monster? They do not know anything in particular that would help them fight him (except perhaps for the ash, which didn’t really help Bram in the end).

So we have Jack (23) + Sun (42) + Hugo (4), Sawyer(15) + Sayid (16) + Kate (51), and if FLocke wants to be sure he’s got them all, he’ll have to get Jin (42) back. Could the rule that he can kill them all together? Live alone, die together? Or just once there is no candidate on the island, FLocke is free? He probably doest need a place for himself, just for them. Once they are gone then the cork is out.

Back to Ilana
I didn’t think she was doing a whole lot from the time Richard came back to the time she was blown up. The last useful direction she gave was to listen to Richard. Was that her final task in protecting the candidates? I would think they continue to need protection, so how could the island be done with her?

There goes Ilana's back-story! That was awesome. Not awesome cool but sudden and overwhelming awesome.

So...if the ghosts are the whispers then why was Ben all "If you hear whispers, run." to Rousseau? What is so dangerous about the ghost whispers? Do they whispers warn of evil? Did whispers come when Richard's wife showed up?

Nikki is awesome as usual! And fast!!

I am finding myself very let down by tonite's ep. Of course I loved seeing Carmen and Libby again and the love theme and the wtf shocker of Ilana exploding but the rest just felt cheesy and corny and predictable. I am one of those who feels disappointed that the Island is purgatory, even if just for bad people. After six years of speculation Hurley simply says that he knows what's going on and Michael says yeah, dude, it's purgatory. Just laid out too simply.

I sound so negative tonite. Sorry. I know there's a lot of wrapping up to do in a short time and that questions have to be answered in a timely fashion!

Yeah, Nikki, why didn't someone demand to know wtf the island is? Why didn't Sun write the question on her tablet at least?

And who didn't figure out that Smokey was going to push Dez down the well? I did, however, love how quickly Locke's face turned from smiling and caring to pure evil!

Dez spying on Hurley and Libby over the top of his shades then driving off with that job-well-done smirk was very corny to me.

I like yall's theory that Jack will now be able to fix John but I, too, am confused as to why
Dez took such drastic measures to enlighten John.

I'm glad they had Sun write the note to Frank cuz I had forgotten about her language situation. She was so fired up last episode but had lost all her passion this week.

So is Hurley's plan to pretend to get in good with Locke then shake Jacob's magic ashes around the plane once all the Losties are on board? Will the last scene be Locke shaking a smokey curse-you fist at the plane as it's taking off?

No mas from downer debbie! Nitenite!

Jason- if Des is trying to make people reconnect, then couldn't he be trying to get Locke back with Jack?

I hadn't thought of that - it makes sense but Jesus! There is no way to know how running over someone in your car is going to go! Unless, Desmond already does know how it ends...

I thought Dez was trying to kill this Locke so the other Locke could be...even...deader.

I am wondering the same thing. Even if there was some exchange of information between his consciousnesses, how did he know Locke needed to die (if there is a connection between the two Locke’s, since no one else is dead both on the island and in the sideways) or to be injured, to meet Jack as many have said here?

@Kotowski – thanks for the poem; that was great.

@Joan Crawford: So...if the ghosts are the whispers then why was Ben all "If you hear whispers, run." to Rousseau? What is so dangerous about the ghost whispers? Do they whispers warn of evil? Did whispers come when Richard's wife showed up?
yes, I was wondering the same thing. It used to mean others were about, but this time it didn’t. And, no, I do not remember hearing whispers when Isabella was there at the end, but maybe in the black rock? Not sure.

I agree with everyone this was an amazing episode. But I must admit, when Desmond ran Locke over, my reaction was B@#*!#%d!!! The island exacts such a price, it makes people commit outrageous crimes and ethical crimes.

We were already given a hint by Hugo finding Kierkegarrd's Fear and Trembling, which reasoned that Abraham could sacrifice his son because God told him, and God exists outside the normal realm of ethical behaviour. Part of the whole point of LOST is questioning what we are ordered to do. And now everyone seems to be following like sheep (except maybe Sawyer and Kate).

Seeing Locke after the accident, traumatic effects engulfing his body, I felt Desmond was like Jacob. Acting only for a higher purpose, the cost being irrelevant (Recall Ben's line to Jack on Ajira about the other passengers). But here, Ben was quite different. More humane than ever before, holding onto Locke.

WAKE UP FOLKS. YOU'VE FORGOTTEN SOMETHING TRULY IMPORTANT!!
Has everyone completely forgotten what happens to people on this island when they finally get the problems of their lives resolved? Think Boone's resolution of his relationship with Shannon? Shannon learning from Sayid that she CAN be loved and was lovable? Ana Lucia learning that no matter how angry she was, she couldn't kill everybody that she perceived was out to get her, but she could learn to live with the past peacefully? And just as she decides to find some peace in her life, what happened? Libby's blossoming romance with Hurley? Eko's newfound promise in building his church? Everyone who finally found this nice peaceful place of existence and then what? Has everyone completely forgotten what happens to those who comes to terms with their own lives and the choices and/or mistakes they've made? Seems to me (and I'm not alone), Jack needs to bend over and kiss his little butt goodbye!

v said...

The explanation of the whispers doesn't sit right with me. I always associated whispers with people appearing, such as Walt appearing to Shannon, except Walt isn't dead. Does that mean dead whisperers are ushering live people to the island to deliver messages? Are dead whisperers creating illusions of living people? I'm not sure, it just doesn't seem like we have all of the info yet.

Nikki, I completely thought "Desmond's killing Locke, so Flocke can't move into his body!" I'm not buying it that he ran him over to try to "awaken" LAX-Locke. He was so gentle with Hurley, how could he go from encouraging a date to running someone over? I think he has two different goals.

Also, it seems like most of the people who have "woken up," have a positive tie to the island life... a love they remember. If they are becoming alert to make some sort of move in LAX, I don't see Locke participating. The majority of Locke's island life is negative, I can't see how becoming aware would make him want to return to a reality where his dad stole a kidney and pushed him out an 8th story window, Helen left him and died, he failed to recruit the Oceanic 6, almost committed suicide, and was murdered by Ben. If Locke remembers his other life he would run scared.

I'm starting to think that the person who will ultimately replace Jacob will be Desmond, brotha! He was a holy man once, after all. I think only potential candidates can see those creepy Ghost Kids, which explains why Sawyer & Des could but Ricardo couldn't.
someone pointed out that Des visiting all the sideways-folks is very muck akin to Jacob visiting all the Universe A folks, and he does seem to be becomign more and more omnipotent.
also, the fact that he's so calm & collected now makes me feel almost as if Jacob has entered his body, much in the same way that MIB entered Locke's 9which might explain why Hurley hasn't seen Jacob in a while).

Sweet merciful Desmond, 65 comments already. Couple of quick things and back again later.

The whispers! Sometimes the simplest explanation is the best. Though I still wonder what triggers them; it isn't like they're ALWAYS whispering. And for awhile there it seemed like they were linked to the Others' appearances, but maybe that's just coincidence.

That was a bit of a disconnect for me, too...it seems like Richard would be more willing to listen to Hurley after he facilitated that wonderful conversation with Isabella.

Hurley just makes the break from Richard without explanation, and we're left wondering why our characters have just handed themselves over to the most dangerous man on the Island. Where's the thought process and/or rational follow-through here?

Gracie: Maybe because you're, umm, using Windows 7? :-) Try something better, like Linux.

Okay, I had a different take on a few things than the rest of you. Maybe I'm way off base, but I liked the feel of the way my loved one and I saw things tonight.

I agree with NanX, the teen boy in the jungle is the same boy. Older. It's like he's having an opposite Richard reaction. Richard never aged, right?

If this boy is little Jacob (re-born), or whoever he is, he has doubled in age in a day. Unlike Richard who didn't age, this boy is aging rapidly. That must terrify MiB.

Which led loved one and I to another tentative conclusion. The "next Jacob" on the island won't be Jack. It will be ... Jacob. All re-grown up again.

Like I said, maybe this is out there in left field - but it's how loved one and I interpreted it tonight, and even if we're wrong, we liked it :-) I love the idea of Jacob having been re-born and aging rapidly, in a race against time to catch up again to MiB.

Speaking of opposites ... (Richard never ages but little Jacob double-ages), could the AU be not ALTERNATE Universe but ... OPPOSITE Universe?

We have already seen some opposite things obviously the strongest example being Hurley now with good luck instead of bad luck.

I ask because loved one and I, when we saw Desmond run his car over Locke, both wondered, "Hmmm, maybe if Desmond kills Locke in AU, then the real Locke will come back to life on the island."

Wouldn't that be awesome?

I know someone else already said this, but I am also thinking that Desmond did not hit Locke to wake him up. Desmond seems to have more capacity to shift between realities than anyone else; he may well have some knowledge of what is happening between himself & Locke on the island. Perhaps his running Locke down is related to that.

I love the scenes between Hurley & Libby, but they also make me sad. The scene where Libby dies was one of the very few on this show that actually made me cry (I'm not much of a crier, but that one tore me up.) Maybe it's because I think Hurley is the sweetest person on the show. He just doesn't seem to have any meanness in him. As Pierre Chang says, "In a world of conflict and strife, there is but one fact we all can agree upon: Everybody loves Hugo!"

This is a very intriguing idea. Jacob, rising like the Phoenix from the ashes of the fire into which Ben pushed him.

When I saw the boy in the jungle, I had the same thought as Convergence - it's the same boy we previously saw, but he's rapidly aging. The MIB probably has experienced this before, and is now trying to ignore the kid while maybe (?) reaching his goal of getting off the island before the kid fully grows up?

I know Nikki's really wedded to her idea that love is the central theme of the island, but what about other strong emotions?

This episode showed us three instances where fear (or the lack of) played a large part:

MiB to Desmond: Why aren't you afraid?

MiB with Desmond in the jungle, when the teen boy shows up: MiB looking fearful. Teen boy so unfearful he is actually playfully laughing.

Jack encountering MiB: Jack looking terrified.

PS: Matthew Fox showed some acting range in this episode of which he should be proud. In the "I learned I've gotta let things go" scene with Hurley he was relaxed, and his facial expression was about as relaxed as can be.

But then when he encountered MiB, his face carried real gut-wrenching fear really, really well.

Quite a difference.

So anyway, Nikki, if last week was a "love" episode, was this a "fear" episode?

This show has so much symmetry. Locke pushes Desmond down a well. Desmond runs Locke over in a car.

Before, Locke tried to get the Oceanic 6 together. On island, Locke wants to bring them together, and is accomplishing that feat, even if by pure luck. (Now he has them: Sawyer, Kate, Jack, Sun, Hurley, Sayid, and a pilot).

Hurley first went with Locke in Season three when the groups split up. Hurley goes to Locke tonight.

I have a bad feeling about Desmond. What is he up to? Does he want to awaken the Losties, but then what? I think he wants them to meet their constants, so they will regain their memories. But if that's the case, then Alt LA may disappear, and so will Helen, Libby etc.

And wasn't Desmond supposed to meet Penny at the coffee shop? What happened. He got his memories back, and now he's off collecting the others. It means he's not finished. Who would Sayid's constant be if not Nadia? bad, bad feeling about Desmond's actions.

Also Desmond has number 42 at McCluck's. 42 is the number of a magic cube--so Desmond is the "magic box."

I'm really confused by this episode. Despite some singularly great moments (Jack and Hurley's confessional, Hurley's beach date with Libby, Locke pushing Desmond down the well), this episode felt rushed.

I got this feeling the moment Ilana exploded ala Doc Arzt. No one took any time to reflect over what just happened, or what it all meant. That was disappointing.

Before we knew it we were at the Black Rock, and it blew up. More time was spent discussing the destruction of the boat than the loss of a life.

Meanwhile, Kate and Sawyer have been stuck in limbo for four episodes now, and all they can do is complain and share imaginary cocoa.

And, to top it all off, the whispers were explained in such a hasty fashion that it felt like a nod and wink at the audience. I didn't care about the answer (although I thought this mystery was answered back in "LA X" when the whispers happened right before the Others showed up) all that much, but more about its presentation. Frankly, the whispers were one mystery I could have happily accepted never knowing the answer to upon the conclusion of the series.

On a positive note, Jorge Garcia was awesome in each of his scenes. Following his blog has made me come to love him as much as I love Hurley. Here's hoping the redshirt is just a red herring.

As usual, great recap, Nikki!

@Convergence said... : Yes, fear has always been a big theme in LOST since the inital Jack telling Kate about counting to five and letting the fear in. Kate tries it when the Smoke Monster appears, but it just doesn't work.

While fear is a major motivator of behaviour on the island--notice in this one Locke asks Desmond why he isn't afraid, there are also other motivators, like power (to control the island).

But love is also a key, but only in the context of fear, sacrifice and faith. I think the writers set the audience up with a romantic image of long lost loves being found in LA X, only to have alternate motivations come to the fore. So I expect a total shift in the plot direction, and perhaps a more darker outcome. Love will still be there in the end, but it will likely be bitter-sweet. Like someone, maybe the new jacob, putting away the bodies of 2 Losties into the rocks--if Desmond turns a wheel at the bottom of some well, we might see this take place some 40 years ago.

I'm not so sure that Desmond is going to be OK. Widmore told him he would have to make a sacrifice; he has Charlie's example (as shown in last episode) of sacrifice before him I think he knows Locke is going to push him down that well. I think he knows he is going to die.

I hope to hell I'm wrong about this one, but if Des thought it was the only way he could save Penny and little Charlie - just as Charlie thought it was the only way he could save Clair and Aaron - he would go calmly to his death, as Charlie did in "Through the Looking Glass"

I am having some trouble with thinking about The Underground Man. It seems the closest fit is Man in Black, who says humanity will not acceed to determinism or destiny, but will strike out against it and act in a way that produces chaos.

Jacob feels mankind can embrace perfection, but this would lead to ennui. Ultimately, Jacob is wrong about humanity; the underground Man (Smokie) is correct.

Wow Nikki. I didn't see it this way at all, though you may be right of course. It appeared to me that the same boy had aged maybe five or six years, but was the same child seen prior running through the jungle. Sure looked like him. Only older. And although I don't have any kind of timeline on how long it's been since Ajira came back, it seemed strange that the kid had aged, but nobody else did. Which led me down the path of why the island boy would be aging so fast when nobody else appears to be. Hmmm. Food for thought.

One week he's telling Locke that he doesn't feel anything and looks the part. Last week when he snatches up Desmond, there's some brightness to his eyes and almost a kindness in his face. Then about the same thing this week showing there are changes happening to Sayid, in a good way. Locke thinks he's got Sayid, but I'm not too sure.

And I'm wondering where I've gone wrong or if I am, so please feel free to correct me. If MIB were in fact in L.A. as Locke, Desmond would NOT be able to hurt him right? Sort of like Blam shooting at Locke and the bullets falling off, and was it Sayid who stabbed Locke? Tore his shirt, but no blood? If I'm right, could this be done (harm the MIB) in L.A.?

Methinks you should enjoy Jack NOW, as in immediately, because if he follows those who came before him, he's on his way out. As in taking a "Permanent Vacation".

And as for the bag: My first, last and only thought about that based on where he picked it up was that it contained the pieces used to play BackGammon between Locke and Walt, among others. I sorta got stuck there, and have not seen a rewatch yet, so I have no reason of my own to think otherwise. Just a guess.

Lisa (UFN): A couple of other things: Ben Linus, "I lie. It's what I do." I wouldn't count him out until he falls over and stops breathing, and it seems to me I recall a time not too long ago when Locke didn't want Ben having any chance to speak alone with Richard. This could be a run for the end game.
I have missed Libby horribly ever since that second gun shot. But I thought she looked horrible tonight, and I couldn't decide if she'd aged badly or the makeup for the crazy lady was that good. In either case, she belongs with Hurley and Hurley will love no other, IMHO.
Didn't see it coming that Ilana would blow, but then why didn't we? She's been acting sort of hair-brained these past few weeks. Jacob told her to ask Richard, Richard says he doesn't know, and turns out Hurley is running the show. I'd be hair-brained too. But she was being very careless with the dynamite especially after having been warned. After it was over, I wondered, in a way, what took so long.
And I didn't understand either what the point was of shoving Des in the well, other than terror, but what's he afraid of? When were these two last together? What does Locke know of Des that would put him on red alert? Why assume that the fall would kill Desmond? He seemed pretty confident that he'd sewn that one up, but it didn't look that way to me, and WE know Des is special. Does Locke know that? Locke said last week he didn't like secrets. Well, neither do I, but normally I don't tend to throw people down wells if they have one. Lots of questions in here.

Loved that Illana blew up. I was totally and utterly shocked by it, but I love it. Great moment.

Loved Hurley (in both worlds). Loved his little aside to Richard.

Loved Libby! So glad she made it back to the show.

LOVED Jack's little speech. He's so dreamy. (Batkitty just hit me for saying that. Jealous, much??!!)

Loved the look on Jack's face when he saw Flocke.

Theories Batkitty and I had:

Desmond is like the AU Jacob now, touching lives of people who need to be awakened.

Desmond ran Locke over for the exact purpose of hooking him up with Jack, through the magic of surgery, to wake them both up. It's good odds that Jack will operate on John, too, because it's the only hospital in the city, and Jack their only spinal surgeon, now that Christian is dead.

That's all, really. Loved the episode (all Hurley episodes rule, although I could have done with a lil' more Carmen. MMM! Love me some Carmen!), and love the way the series is going.

Speaking of Michael...explanation of the whispers and the dead that Hurley can see on the island. That damn island has some hold on people!

I like that Flocke is afraid of Des...I knew he was gonna push him down that well. Poor Des...he gets so abused.

Can't wait until next week but am fearing the end.

I don't get it sometimes. Penny and Desmond being away for 3 or 4 years is romantic and grand but Jin and Sun being apart for 3 years is annoying and dull. I would argue that we know more about Sun and Jin than we ever did about Des and Penny (especially Penny).

The Kwons were rarely ever a part of the "Let's get answers" main arc. Their storyline was that of a broken marriage. Main characters they are but compared to Jack,Locke,Sawyer, and Kate, they were rarely a part of the jungle adventures.

I consider them B tier main characters( or as I like to call them "Beachies). Along with Charlie, Claire, Michael,Walt and even Boone with Shannon. They were all Hometown characters to the "A-team's" explorers slash warriors escapades.

Jacob does have something in store for them and that is enough for me. but to write off their separation when it is similiar to the Humes' plotline is not fair. Especially when they are far more developed as characters than Des and Penny.

I think Desmond ran down Locke because he was committing a "violation". He is forcing Locke to "see" his other life on the Island. I think Desmond ran down Locke because he was committing a "violation". He is forcing Locke to "see" his other life on the Island. It's a violation because it should be all about each individual's free will and choice and he is literally receiving a bump from the outside. Just like what Charlie did to Desmond when he veered the car into the water. Plus... Dr. Linus was clearly trying to tell him - you can't park here (parking violation). ~Signed Seabreezy

And if you're right, and Eloise doesn't already know, can you see the look on her face when she finds out???? OMG?!?!?! I know it's an actress, but she plays her part SO well, I would pay cash money to watch them film this!!!

Great post and great comments already.

Did anyone notice that Desmond took FLocke's hand when he offered it? To the best of my recollection, while we have seen his hand offered to Kate, Sun, etc., Desmond might be the first to have accepted it... Uh oh?

YES! But please: doesn't anybody else see that little peeky, sneaky bit of life back in Sayid's eyes? A little animation? Not so much of the "I don't feel anything." I think somehow we are gonna get him back!!!

I have a feeling Nikki was none too pleased with MIB for pushing Desmond down the well (I could see her gasping and yelling at the TV! LOL)

There were a few gaspworthy moments. When Libby showed up, Ilana Kaboom and obviously when Desmond hit alt-Locke. It did seem kind of out of place though given that the entire episode was Hurley's to tack that on at the end. For some weird reason Desmond must think that this is his way of "showing" alt Locke about the island reality. Not sure how though.

I did feel that the story progressed, although I'm not quite sure I believe Hurley, he's turned into the old Locke, I was reminded of Locke blowing up the sub in front of Jack the same way Hurley blew up the Black Rock.

RIP Ilana, she really never grew on me, although the moment with her and Ben was quite touching. I have a feeling we will see her again.

Where was Jin??? I was totally expecting a reunion...he was MIA all episode.

I wished that somehow Michael could have apologized to Libby "in person", he apology seemed rather insincere! Does Libby look a lot different? Seems that you have to be a little bit crazy in order to see the island world. I hope they don't turn the island into the figment of someone's crazy imagination at the end of it all.

So now it seems all the characters in alt reality are starting to see the island. I'm intrigued to see where they take this...

@Anybody: Please refresh my memory. I am currenly rewatching last nights show. Somebody please tell me why Richard is such a nervous Nelly?
He was always on Jacob's side, then he felt that he'd been betrayed, and was screaming that he had changed his mind to MIB.
Hugo showed up and talked Richard down from his hysteria as both himself and as Isabella. Richard calmed down and settled himself with Team Hurley/Jacob.
Then what happened to get him all riled up again? He's kinda sad. Can't even manage his backpack.
Anybody?

WV: stical. A sticker that will stick on everything?

Somebody else see if you can see this? John is at the tree (with Sayed), and he is about to cut Desmond loose. John says, "....I don't know what else it." Cut. Cut. Camera to Desmond. Camera to Locke, and then it's going back to Des. WATCH THIS REAL SLOW. Desmond's eyes seem to almost close, and his head droops for just a microsecond, it's just an instant, but it's like he's about to fall asleep. There's even a sway almost left, right, upright. Gotta watch it slow. It is literally instantaneous, just before Locke says, "You mind if I ask you...."
Does that strike anybody else as extremely odd for Des right there? I try not to pick out every little peculiarity, but this is just weird.

WV: redul. As if life wasn't dull enough already, somebody had to dim the lights to redul?

@ Gracie - the episode you are trying to recall is Season 5's "The Lie", where Ben goes to Simon's Butcher Shop and speaks with Jill and asks about the two other 'Others', Gabriel & Jeffrey (who I always assumed were the two guys sent to grab Sayid at his Apartment of Extremely Clean Upended Chef's Knives).

I think Richard is undone by the succession of events that are foiling his attempts at a plan. First, Sun gets all Korean Krazy in his face, then Ilana goes boom-boom and then Hurley, after first arguing with, then agreeing with him that they need to hit up The Black Rock ... proceeds to Michael Bay the ship all ova the jungle. That would ruffle MY J. Crews, I can tellya.

I keep thinking about the many, many times we've seen a speeding car strike a key character and then placing last night's ending in that context. Could the car that struck Locke's mother Emily been yet another attempt to foil the MIB's evil plan, with foreknowledge of his dastardly deeds?

I LOVE how we're all trying to come up with humane explanations for why Desmond would have mown down a guy in a wheelchair. "Maybe he was helping him see the other side." "Maybe he's trying to get him to the hospital to see Jack." Heehee!! Wouldn't there be less painful and violent ways to do that?! Maybe just, you know, talk to the guy or something? I can't wait for the explanation of why he did that. I don't think we've ever seen Desmond do something that violent (yeah, he killed Inman, but that was an accident).

Couple more questions cause I know you guys will take the time to help me out: :)

When was the last time the actual John Locke and Desmond Hume were together?
Does Desmond know that Locke/Bentham is dead? If so, who does he think that is since he just got here?

AND from what we saw during the Jack/Richard exchange inside the Black Rock, NONE of these people can actually die right? That didn't exclude Richard because he has eternal life, but it SHOULD exclude Frank, Miles, Ben, and anyone else NOT a candidate.

Do I remember this correctly?

Thank In Advance!

I believe the name Hurley refers to that car he was fixing up -- at the beginning of season 4 when Hugo is driving crazy, the news voice-over that Jack hears refers to Hugo driving a "hurley."

So the whispers are the souls of people stuck on the island. Now I have to rewatch every episode with whispers. But why then did Ben tell Danielle (when he stole Alex) to run if she ever heard whispers in the jungle?

Let's just review what's happened to Des in the last week, shall we? He's been shot, kidnapped, drugged and stuffed into a submarine, blasted with electromagnetic energy, crossed worlds, re-kidnapped by Sayid, tied up, and now thrown down a well. No wonder he thinks there's no point in being scared. And Nikki, I don't think he's dead.

I think Hurley knew Jacob's ashes were in the bag. Didn't Ilana tell him?

Totally loved Libby and Hugo's date. And the fact that they ended up knowing it was the date they were supposed to have . . . I cried.

Spazzoid Richard is on my nerves. Why wasn't he wearing the cross?

I'm sure I'm repeating things already noted here, but I wanted to throw in my 2 cents anyway!

I was starting to feel that way, too, although I was intrigued by whatever had happened between her and Jacob to make him like a father to her. I had a thought on the reason why Desmond hit Locke. If someone dies in the alternate world, they have to stay on the Island. If they die on the island, they get to stay in the alternate reality. At some point the alternate world people will catch up in time to the Island people creating a time inconsistency (you know two versions of the same person existing at the same time thing). So this is resolved in some way by one or the other dying. So if Desmond kills Locke, then he must stay on the Island. Or, even that he could never make it to the Island in the next three years.

Also, I thought the whispers explanation was corny.

Nikki Stafford said...

Convergence: So anyway, Nikki, if last week was a "love" episode, was this a "fear" episode?

Fear is, like any emotion, something we can't control, and something that can motivate us to do things as well, as you say. And it's always been a central theme of the show (think of the first episode where Jack tells Kate about letting fear in for 5 seconds and then being rid of it... in other words, his attempt to control that emotion). I think that is a central idea to this episode, and in fact, this morning when I was thinking it through again on the way to work and trying to figure out how I'd write it up for the book, I was thinking that might be the lens through which I do it. ;)

Nikki Stafford said...

Fred answering Convergence: Yes, fear has always been a big theme in LOST since the inital Jack telling Kate about counting to five and letting the fear in.

Does anyone else get the feeling Jacob is laughing at MiB? He though it was all so simple:
Step 1: Get Ben to kill Jacob
Step 2: Get off the Island

Now he has to deal with Candidates and their shenanigans. Sawyer's constant "I'm bored, what are we doing?? Let's do something...ANYTHING!!! Let's blow something up, or shoot something, or at least let me walk around shirtless..."

Claire and her constant need for attention "I'm not you favorite anymore, I'm not on the list, and when are we getting my son you promised me we would get my son and now you have Sayid doing your dirty work and he creeps me out I don't like when he's around and why do I have to wait so long to kill Kate YOU NEVER LET ME DO ANYTHING I WANT!!!"

Sayid and his newfound numbness "I'm dead inside and you won't tell me why"

Jin and his love life "I want to go see my woman, I don't care if my leg is oozing puss, I'm leaving. and no, I'm not letting the giant gash on my leg get some air, I taughf myself the English language I'LL DO WHATEVER THE HELL I WANT"

Kate with her flip flopping ways "Why do you need Jack to be here, we've got Sawyer and he's just as good...until Jack gets back and then of course we can just send Sawyer home...until Jack yells at me, and tries to 'keep it real' with me, then I'll need Sawyer's shoulder to cry on...unless he gets all 'I miss Juliet' on me, then I'll be ready for some Jack lovin'..."

And now Jack and Hurley have joined the group and we all know how good they are at being patient and following instructions lol

@Gracie re: @JS said: Now that they are all together, and Desmond is gone, and anyone else who has additional knowledge of the island is gone, how far can the candidates really negotiate with the monster? They do not know anything in particular that would help them fight him (except perhaps for the ash, which didn’t really help Bram in the end).

I didn't mean everyone with knowledge is gone gone, just that in this little FLocke hosted party, we have the candidates (minus Jin, if we are still considering him a possible candidate) and Claire, and everyone else is a temple other. Without Ben or Richard's knowledge, which could arguably help them (but they haven't been much help lately, have they), and without Miles' abilities, which he can use at will (unlike Hurley, who has to wait to be communicated to by any random ghost) and without Desmond, the secret weapon we aren't quite sure how to use, they do not have any extra special powers or knowledge that would help them beat Smokey.

I am very interested in how this show down is going to happen - pure fighting, with guns and such, which seems like a fruitless pursuit, or Smokey cancelling powers, of which they have none?

Gracie to Benny: Benny I don't mean to be argumentative by any means, but wasn't Desmond's induced by an MRI?

Maybe Benny's already responded, but I think he's suggesting that Desmond's vision started in the accident (i.e. the hatch exploding) and that's why he continues to be triggered by any sort of radiation in either world. So the original cause was the accident, but I guess if we see the sideways world as being completely separate, then in that world, yes, it was the MRI (i.e. radiation) that triggered his vision.

Is Dr. Brooks some sort of "Alternate Universe Protector" like Eloise? He just seemed vague when talking to Hurley about Libby, and it was like he was trying to keep him from discovering the truth...like he knew the truth. But he did cave pretty easily for the money. OVER-ANALYZING ALERT.

Also, did Libby admit herself to the mental hospital only a few days ago after she saw the commercial with Hugo in it that sparked her memory? THAT made her feel crazy enough to admit herself to a mental hospital???!!! Quite a big step to take for only having CRAZY symptoms for such a short while. She also tells Hurley that along with having these visions of another life (plane crash, island, Hurley) when she gets to Santa Rosa she feels like she'd been there before as well. Some of these situations really feel like the writers are pushing it.

Or kinda like I already said. It's been determined that you cannot kill the candidates. So MIB gets them all in one place thinking they are all leaving (say they are in the plane). The actual REPLACEMENT, who may or may not know that they ARE the replacement, then either CANNOT or WILL NOT leave. The MIB cannot kill him/her. The others wouldn't. So what's he gonna do?
Am I wrong in my thinking here? Just tell me where.

@ Gracie:

I suspect the MIB can't harm the candidates, and that the candidates can't kill themselves.

So either:

A) The MIB needs them together so he can convince/trick someone to kill them for him, or so he can convince/trick them into killing themselves

or

B) He actually wants them to leave, and his freedom is possible only if Jacob is dead and all possible future-Jacobs are off-Island

or

C) He does himself actually want to physically leave the Island with them like he told Kate and Sawyer. I kind of doubt this option, but you never know...

Sagacious Penguin said...

Whichever candidate is the replacement, CAN leave or be killed (after all other candidates have died, and they all left the Island previously). They just can't kill themselves. No self-elimination from the game.

Rad said...

Seriously though, I though the episode was OK, nothing great but at least we're moving forward.

-I didn't like the explanation for the whispers. I didn't hate it, but I thought it was a little weak. I'm guessing the reason we here the whispers before the Others swarm your group in the jungle is some sort of a warning. The spirits of the trapped souls are telling you to run in quiet voices which kind of defeats the purpose becuase you have to stand there and try to figure out what their saying. Them: "DUCK!!"
You: "What??"
BAM you've been Other'd

-I think Desi is not afraid because he's already seen his own death, he knows it's not caused by being pushed into a well or even by Flocke (I think he knows who Locke really is but he's just casting some doubt in the man). I think has already seen the event that are unfolding before him so he know exactly what's supposed to happen which gives him the quite confidence that the ladies love so much. He's not afraid because he has already seen and has to come to terms with what's about to happen.

-DES THINKS HE'S TRAPPED IN A GAME OF GRAND THEFT AUTO!! If, as many have said, he ran over Locke to give him that near death experience required to see "the other side", wasn't there a much less violent way of doing this? He could have followed him somewhere and strangled him until his subconscious accepted the Island memories (this would also have been cool because it would mirror Ben killing Locke in the OT). There is a chance of actually killing him by hitting him with your car which would defeat the purpose.

My question is, Helen is supposed to be the love of Locke's life. He has been with her for quite some, their married and are living the good life (minus the walking involved), why has he not had any memories? I think the connection had to have been made on the Island, otherwise Jin/Sun would have had memories as well. Penny and Des are of course the option since Desmond is the creator/key-maker (The Matrix).

-Did anyone else think that Hugo's mom would hook him up with Ana Lucia?? I was waiting for that the moment she started talking about the date she set up for him.

-I like how MiB is slowly unraveling before our eyes. He started off so self-assured and confident (remember everyone saying how "different" Locke was acting before we knew who he really was), and know there's this kid that keeps appearing in the woods that is pissing him off, Desmond's not afraid of him and that makes him nervous so he has no choice but to push him into an old well. He has such a puzzled look on his face when he asks Des his fearlessness, like he just feels things starting to go the wrong way. Also, Widmore brought in those damn pylons that he hates so much, apparently he hadn't planned on that either.

This is a really long comment so I'm just going to stop myself now....

@SagaciousPenguin. You are correct about Libby being there in the Original Time Line. I was only using her comment to help figure out WHEN exactly she admitted herself to Santa Rosa. I didn't explain myself very well. To me, it just seems like a very short time and a very drastic step to take. But perhaps she also remembered being shot, not just once, but twice, in the stomach, in a dark underground tunnel by a deranged former stranger/friend. I guess that would be enough to send her to seek mental help

@Nikki/Gracie: Actually, in the AU, Desmond's first vision is of Charlie's hand with the message on it, right after the Charlie made the car crash at the docks.

The second one was of Penny in the MRI (electromagnetic).

My thought was, since it wasn't a complete near-death experience, Desmond did not have a full 'see-through', but merely had the door unlocked and got a glimpse. The EM of the MRI opened it wider.

That's how I saw it.

Incapable of any articulate thought last night other than "WTF?" which, while apropos, fails my own standards of expression, this morning I offer from my own melancholic and sanguine POV: our heroes are fouling out of the game.

- Sayid betrays Desmond? Judas Priest, is it Ides of March? Could I get a deeper wellshaft over here? No, this hand-dug one over there is a little too short, 'sides there's an injured guy pluggin' it up--handsome guy, resigned, even fearless, but gummin' up the works all the same-- No, I need a really, really deep hole; the kind that reaches all the way to Hell and I don't mean outer ring of wandering shades cuz' he's already there; this one needs to go all the way to 9C-4R. What's that? Cassius? No, Sayid's taking his place, the big guy cleared it all and he's warming up the old jaw muscles as we speak.

- ?Hugo se mentira? Aye Dios mio, su mama tiene que pegarle en sus cachetes otra vez! Hugo doesn't lie! Hugo doesn't scooby-doo his friends. Oh, wait, he does: he always leads them straight to a John Locke trap. Stupid idiot liar, cannon fodder feeder.

- Jack, quit sneaking Hurley's clonazepam, cause you got some leading to do, my friend. Go bust up a lighthouse, pop a truth pill, find a sea urchin needle and drain some of your own blood, light a fuse, hell, just go get your frickin' tattoo's reinterpreted, find your father since he's missing in two dimensions, but please do something leaderly awesome. The good leader, not the control freak. You've seen both sides. You can walk the line. Man up, nobody wants you to say baaa.

- Kate has a nice smile, doesn't she? Sure, her running and tracking skills seem a pale shadow of their former Atatlantan glory, and she seems more a stand-in for a doorstop or potted palm than the hope-unlooked-for Eowyn or stealth Leia we all (ahem, some of us...OK a few of us...just me?); still I have a glimmer of hope she'll come through but time is running out and she better get off that log and stop sitting in spilled faux cocoa if she's going to position herself to be part of anyone's big push.

- Lapidus? Teaching Stones to Talk? The bedrock of mighty faith? Just a dirty uniform with wings that may or may not work? I think Bram was stoned, but if he is a candidate now, he's sleeping through the alarm clock. Again.

- Sun and Jin just need to get their Wonder Twin rings into physical contact and assume the form of insulated smoke-eating dragon and shape of zero-Kelvin refrigerator. But alas a strait of oddly uncrossable ocean divides them. Maybe she can't row with her Korean voice. Maybe Jin's leg is hurting too bad. Maybe it's an overworn plot device.

- Sawyer, dude, I know the Milennium Falcon is idling out in a jungle clearing somewhere or tied up to a dock under Widmorian goon guard, but get your groove on, conman dude.

- Finally, Desmond, who are you? Daniel's constant and Jacob's variable? The watchmaker's human son or Doctor Manhattan. Angel of enlightenment or Angel of (pedophilic, voyeurish, BMW vs wheelchair) Death. Seriously, I don't care if you were "nudging Locke towards his epiphany with a trip to neurosurgeon Jack en route", exacting cross-dimensional revenge for the well-tipping thing, or fulfilling an initiation ritual for your employers, the Time Police. I'm mad as hell -- you are acheiving neither hero nor antihero status, and we don't need another villain. Venal, mortal, unforgivable, what's next? Whatever it is, it is less evil than running down buddha's in wheelchairs in school parking lots.

Nikki, back to you -- find the love through the pink mist, I dare you. Please...

@ Kiki -- Always possible, but I rarely try to include my own forward-thinking when actually watching the show. It's not that I have another end for Illana in mind - frankly I'd no clue where they were going with her. Just "not going anywhere" with her isn't a good choice to me. Here's hoping she'll play some better role in the future as a ghost or flashback character or Altered Universe character. We need to pay off those Russian hospital scenes, the purpose of the "Shadow of the Statue" folks, and Jacob being "Like a Father" to her...

Part of the anti-climax, too, is spending multiple episodes bringing a group of characters together only to split them up before they had a chance to do anything. Why bring them together and have them form a plan in the first place? It's not that the episode took things to places I didn't expect or didn't want it to go -- it's that it did so without paying off other things the show carefully set-up and/or introduced.

But this is LOST, so they may very well find ways to pay these off yet. At least Illana, I have hope for. Not so much the quick-change Hurley "Hey! Let's throw ourselves at Locke!" decision. Pretty rough plotting there. And I only call them on it, b/c I know they're generally brilliant at such things.

@ JS: Keamy, Omar, and Patchy?

Yes, and now they are no longer a factor. So maybe Desmond believes if he does this he will eliminate the shell MiB is using. Locke is buried on the island and stuck in this body. Not the best theory, but still trying to come up with an alternate theory to Desmond wanting to just "open his eyes".

BTW, I don't usually nit-pick on the production values, BUT .... was that not the WORST fake well you've ever seen? I mean, C'MON ... I've seen better pâpier-maché models in a grade school play. *harrumph*

Okay, got THAT outta my system. Moving on ...

Regarding the island being Pergatory -- ok so Michael said it's where some people are stuck -- buy this is Lost. The only place to get stuck is Pergatory? I think we need to broaden our thoughts here. While that was the immediate thought that popped into my mind, reading all the comments and ideas about a variety of topics is making me question, the "answer" we got. Maybe it is only a hint at the big picture.

@ambivalentman: More time was spent discussing the destruction of the boat than the loss of a life.
I know. That startled me more than anything. The way she wasn't referenced or talked about, just gone.

@noah: joseph was jacob's favorite son - and joseph got thrown down a well by his brothers.
And then after that (skipping much of the story) Joseph was used to bring deliverance to Jacob and to his (Joseph's) brothers. And one of his brothers was named Benjamin. (I refuse to admit that Ben is not important :)

@Lisa UFN: ZensibleJack. hahahahaha! In my notes I wrote, "I like zen Jack" :) Great minds think alike.

@Kiki: And Desmond took Flocke's Hand!! Nooooo
I was screaming the same thing. "Don't take his hand! Aaagghhh!!"

@Gracie: WV: verfeds. Verifiably given vittles? or people that regulate Verification Word Definitions :)

@CNP68: Didn't Ana Lucia kill Goodwin? It didn't have anything to do with Harper. Right?
Well, Ben sent Goodwin off (seeming to know he would get killed) because of his affair with Juliet, which kinda sorta then comes back to Harper, because Harper was as jealous as Ben over the whole thing. But there wasn't a direct connection.

@humanebean: movie spinoffs - hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

@blackandpurple: So if Desmond kills Locke, then he must stay on the Island. Or, even that he could never make it to the Island in the next three years.
So maybe, if Des dies on the Island, then he gets to stay in alternaworld and live with Penn-eh? (that theory is for Nikki :)

Okay, enough replying, let me throw my two cents out there before we hit 200 comments :)

VW: colas - um... Coke and Pepsi

Oh and Marc Oromaner totally covered the Willy Wonka thing a couple months back. So I won't go there except to say I hope that's the transmedia and only reason ABC did the creepy promo soundreel. Unless someone really is holding a Slugworth card and the glass elevator is the upways-sideways way off the island. If Jacob's Wonka, who's Charlie Bucket? Look for a kid with "absent father" sydrome...

I liked this episode, but it did feel a little scattered. But there are SO many pieces to tie up, I can kind of understand why they're jumping around so much.

1. My reaction when Michael showed up: Man, he asks for Libby and gets Michael?! What a rip off!

2. The instant Ilana ripped open the knapsack to show the dynamite I started screaming at the tv. I can't believe she made it all the way back to the camp before blowing up. I have not been an Ilana fan from the first she was introduced and although I was like, what? I wasn't too torn up over it. Time to get on to other things. She wasn't furthering the plot in any way.

3. Hugo: "I eat when I'm depressed." Desmone: "What's her name?" haha

4. Did anyone else think that Ben was walking all weird. Robotic was the term that came to my mind. Very strange.

5. When Hurley asked Libby out on a date I screamed, "No PICNICS!" which startled the rest of my family.

6. Desmond cannot seem to get those top buttons on his shirt to stay closed :P

7. As soon as Locke led Desmond into the clearing where we see the well my Dad said, "He's gonna push him in." I was thinking Frozen Donkey Wheel. I wish I had been right.

8. Sawyer's entire vocabulary ever since "Recon" has consisted of "where are you going?" and "where have you been?" He needs to pick the books back up, he's losing the ability to speak.

The idea of Jacob being the rapidly growing boy and the talk of him being a Phoenix rising from the ashes brought to mind a post I did after last season's finale. If anyone is interested you can find it here... (and I can't remember how to do that link thing so you'll have to cut and paste if you're interested)
http://sonshinemusic.blogspot.com/2009/05/jacob-esau-ashes-and-phoenix.html

(at that point we had taken to referring to MiB as Esau or MaybEsau, so excuse that reference)

FLocke: "We're here."
Des: "What is it?"
FLocke: "It's a well."
@humanbeane: It's not made very well, either. BaDaDum.

WAY BACK WHEN:
John: "What is it?"
Richard: "It's a compass."
John: "What does it do?"
Richard: "It points north, John."

I love the simple conversations.

@Humanebean - do you have a release date on those movies? LOL to you, sir!!

@Rad - yeah, I agree we need a better explaination for why the whispers happened before the others showed up.

@TM Lawrence - thanks for putting to words what I was feeling last night, hilariously.

The Question Mark said -- someone pointed out that Des visiting all the sideways-folks is very muck akin to Jacob visiting all the Universe A folks, and he does seem to be becomign more and more omnipotent

But Jacob never ran anyone over with a car. Or no one tried to make Jacob "see the light" I think Desmond is different. And while he is a key, he is not a candidate.

@ Nikki: Save yourself the trouble of "Notes from the Underground" unless you're really up for a nihilistic stroll down a dark Russian street. You'd only meet an existentially angsty bureaucrat who has forsaken the crystalline utopia of socialism, convulsing on the horns of the dilemma of whether or not he has done a prostitute a favor by 1) paying her a fiver for doing nothing; 2) loving her and confessing his own shortcomings and insecurities; then 3) verbally debasing her.
Fun read but at least it was free on Gutenberg...

Whew! Made it through! Great stuff all around.

@Lisa(until further notice): I also liked his little "talk" with "possible perv" Desmond in the AU.

I also liked how quickly Desmond responded to Ben's question about his child. No hesitation or doubt; Lil' Charlie is as much a child to Sideways Desmond as Island Desmond.

But will we find out who original timeline Oceanic 815 Libby really is before all of this is said and done?

Sadly, I don't think so. Which is frustrating, especially because Darlton always said that storyline was dropped because because Watros wouldn't come back.

Well, they got her back, but of course, now they can't shoehorn in her backstory...

FWIW, Darlton's "official" explanation, via podcast, for Libby was that her husband Dave died and she went a little crazy, which is why she was in the hospital with Hurley. But she never mentioned it to him for fear of freaking him out. Or something.

@Benny: Michael is associated with the whispers, like Christian was when he appeared on the freighter to Michael.

Ah, good point. So perhaps THAT Christian was Ghost Christian and not MiB Christian, despite the similarity in dress?

@Sagcious Penguin: LOST always excels when it answers things without just SAYING "_____ is ______."

Generally, I agree with you. But I think there's a decent-sized contingent of viewers out there (the kind we're not likely to find in these parts) who don't consider a question answered unless the show says "____ is ____". To that end, I sometimes think the writers feel compelled to sprinkle in a few direct answers like this. Not that I necessarily like it, but there's probably a reason for it.

@Joan: "There goes Joan in the Tempo of Doom."

Oh, Joan, you've done it again!

@TiaSabita: And who didn't figure out that Smokey was going to push Dez down the well?

Not me, but then, it was late, and I was too busy trying to puzzle out why Desmond wasn't afraid and why that seemed to freak Locke out so much.

Will the last scene be Locke shaking a smokey curse-you fist at the plane as it's taking off?

That would be pretty awesome. :)

@Gracie: Seems to me (and I'm not alone), Jack needs to bend over and kiss his little butt goodbye!

Yeah, as much as I've been enjoying Zen Jack this season, there's still a part of me that wouldn't mind that. :)

@Fred: This show has so much symmetry. Locke pushes Desmond down a well. Desmond runs Locke over in a car.

Oh, good one! I hadn't made that connection.

@Gracie Can somebody please describe who the Senator is as opposed to the person I know as Bruce Davison?

In the first "X-Men" movie Bruce Davison portrayed Senator Robert Kelly, a fairly significant villain/supporting character in the X-Men comic book mythos. TO this day, Bruce Davison=Senator Kelly to me.

@Batcabbage: It's good odds that Jack will operate on John, too, because it's the only hospital in the city, and Jack their only spinal surgeon, now that Christian is dead.

Ha! It's funny cuz it's (seemingly) true.

@Gracie: Does Desmond actually know that John Locke or Jeremy Bentham died, and as a result we have Flocke?

Technically, I don't believe Desmond is privy to the whole "Locke is dead, this is the Smoke Monster in Locke's form" info, but presumably his experiences in the last episode have imparted him new knowledge he didn't otherwise know.

@Rad: Does anyone else get the feeling Jacob is laughing at MiB?...Now he has to deal with Candidates and their shenanigans.

I love it! Your right; I have a feeling this is definitely turning out to be harder than Smokey expected.

@Lisa (until futher notice) Also, did Libby admit herself to the mental hospital only a few days ago after she saw the commercial with Hugo in it that sparked her memory?

For what it's worth, my impression was that she'd been in the hospital for some time.

@Rad: The spirits of the trapped souls are telling you to run in quiet voices which kind of defeats the purpose becuase you have to stand there and try to figure out what their saying. Them: "DUCK!!"
You: "What??"
BAM you've been Other'd

Wow-I love this idea! Frankly, if we're given no other info on the subject, that's the answer with which I'm sticking.

@Sagacious Penguin: Here's hoping she'll play some better role in the future as a ghost or flashback character or Altered Universe character. We need to pay off those Russian hospital scenes, the purpose of the "Shadow of the Statue" folks, and Jacob being "Like a Father" to her...

She kinda has to, doesn't she? I mean, dead or not, she'll have to figure into the whole Shadow Seeker backstory, and they HAVE to give us that at some point, don't they? And there's definitely more to reveal about Jacob; chances are she'll show up there, too, I'd like to think.

@Humanebean: I don't usually nit-pick on the production values, BUT .... was that not the WORST fake well you've ever seen? I mean, C'MON ... I've seen better pâpier-maché models in a grade school play. *harrumph*

No, it really, really was a terrible well.

Do you watch in HD? I do, and I even wondered when watching it if the well would have looked better in standard def, that is was one of those cases where HD works to the show's disadvantage.

@S Penguin: The splitting of Team-Richard from Team-Hurley just didn't feel right what with the bonding those two went through in Ab Aeterno. What was the point of that coming together if they're to split off so quickly and for no clear reason.

That was a bit of a disconnect for me, too...it seems like Richard would be more willing to listen to Hurley after he facilitated that wonderful conversation with Isabella.

For me this was a bit of a power struggle and on one hand I'm glad that Richard did not just follow Hurley's lead. They need to split up for some reason that I think will be made know to us soon.

One thing- I think Desmond could have given Locke a near death experience without running him over. Speeding toward Locke and then slamming on the breaks would have done the trick. I think he was trying to kill him. Maybe he's holding a grudge for being thrown down the well, but it's probably much more than that.

Austin Gorton said...

@Kiki: They need to split up for some reason that I think will be made know to us soon.

I realized last night that with Richard ultimately headed for Hydra Island, and with Ben along for the ride, that likely puts Ben within the orbit of Widmore.

Which should be interesting and fun to watch. And, it might even shed some light on whether Widmore is truly "good" or "evil" and more about Ben and Widmore's conflict.

I had a thought about that big stick that NotLocke is whittling on. It’s starting to look an awful lot like the pointy stick with which Ana Lucia skewered Goodwin, and that worries me. True, NotLocke is already well-armed with a big knife, but it seems like he is making a spear. And if that’s really the case, then, WHY?
